The goal is to find an optimal policy that maximizes the expected cumulative reward.

2. Deep Learning:

AlphaGo, developed by DeepMind, was a groundbreaking achievement in the field of game playing. It utilized deep reinforcement learning techniques to defeat world champion Go players. AlphaGo combined Monte Carlo tree search with deep neural networks, allowing it to evaluate and select moves in the game of Go.

Building upon the success of AlphaGo, DeepMind developed AlphaZero, which achieved superhuman performance not only in Go but also in chess and shogi. AlphaZero employed a generalized version of the algorithm used in AlphaGo, removing any human knowledge or heuristics. 5. Policy Gradient Methods:

6. Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO):

Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) is a popular policy gradient algorithm that has shown promising results in game playing. PPO aims to strike a balance between sample efficiency and policy updates to ensure stable and efficient learning.

PPO achieves this by using a trust region approach, which limits the policy update to a certain range to prevent significant policy changes that may lead to instability. By iteratively optimizing the policy within this trust region, PPO achieves robust and stable performance.

7. Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning:

Game playing often involves multiple agents interacting with each other, leading to a more challenging and dynamic environment. Multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) focuses on training agents to make optimal decisions while considering the actions and behaviors of other agents.

MARL algorithms can be broadly categorized into three types: independent learners, centralized learners with decentralized execution, and centralized learners with centralized execution. Independent learners treat other agents as part of the environment, while centralized learners consider the actions of other agents during training or execution.
