Program analysis faces a fundamental tension: we want to know properties of all possible program executions, but exact answers are almost always undecidable. The halting problem is the canonical example, but even simpler questions—will this array access ever be out of bounds? Does this lock acquisition always precede the corresponding release?—are undecidable in general by Rice’s Theorem. The practical solution, pioneered by Patrick and Radhia Cousot in their landmark 1977 paper “Abstract Interpretation: A Unified Lattice Model for Static Analysis of Programs,” is to compute sound approximations: the analysis may say “I don’t know” when a property definitely holds, but it must never say the property holds when it might not. This is the essence of abstract interpretation.

The mathematical structure is elegant: a Galois connection between a concrete domain (the actual program semantics, typically an infinite powerset of states) and an abstract domain (a finite or simpler representation, such as intervals, signs, or polyhedra). The abstract semantics is systematically derived from the concrete semantics by the Galois connection, guaranteeing soundness by construction. The Cousots showed that the design of a static analysis reduces to the choice of an abstract domain and the definition of abstract transfer functions—the rest follows mathematically. 1. The Concrete Semantics as a Fixpoint

  1. Choose an abstract domain (A) with a concretization (\gamma) (or abstraction (\alpha)).

The choice of abstract domain determines what properties can be expressed and how precisely.

3.1 The Sign Domain

The sign domain abstracts integer values by their sign:

The interval domain is efficient ((O(1)) per operation) but imprecise: it loses all relational information between variables. If we know (x \in [0, 5]) and (y = x), the interval domain deduces (y \in [0, 5]) but cannot deduce (x = y).

3.3 The Polyhedra Domain

To capture linear relationships, Cousot and Halbwachs (1978) introduced the convex polyhedra domain. An abstract element is a conjunction of linear inequalities:

5. Advanced Abstract Domains and Applications

5.1 Pointer and Shape Analysis

Abstract interpretation extends naturally to the heap. The shape analysis of Sagiv, Reps, and Wilhelm (2002) uses three-valued logic as the abstract domain to track pointer structures. A concrete heap cell is either a summary node (representing multiple cells) or a singleton, and predicates (e.g., reachable(n, x), cyclic(n)) describe heap connectivity. The analysis can verify that a list manipulation procedure preserves the singly-linked list invariant—a property well beyond the reach of interval or numerical domains.

Theorem 5.1 (Parametric Shape Analysis). For any finite set of instrumentation predicates (P), the parametric shape analysis framework provides a sound abstract interpretation that tracks the truth values (true, false, unknown) of each predicate for each abstract heap cell. By selecting the appropriate predicates, the analysis can be tuned to the invariant of interest (singly-linked, doubly-linked, trees, etc.).

5.2 The Apron Numerical Abstract Domain Library

The Apron library (Jeannet and Miné, 2009) provides a unified interface to numerical abstract domains implementing the abstract interpretation framework. Supported domains include intervals, octagons, convex polyhedra (via the NewPolka or PPL libraries), and zonotopes. 6. Abstract Interpretation and Machine Learning

A recent and exciting development is the application of abstract interpretation to the verification of neural networks. The problem is: given a trained neural network (N : \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^m) and an input region (R \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n) (say, an (\ell_\infty) ball of radius (\varepsilon) around an image), does the network classify all points in (R) as the same label? This is the robustness verification problem.

Theorem 6.1 (AI², Gehr et al., 2018). Abstract interpretation can overapproximate the output range of a neural network over a given input region. Using the Zonotope abstract domain (affine forms), the AI² system propagates input intervals through each layer of the network, computing sound bounds on the output logits. If the lower bound of the correct logit exceeds the upper bounds of all other logits, robustness is proved.
