Electrons are running out of steam. The energy cost of moving data across a silicon chip—through copper wires with parasitic capacitance and resistance—dominates the power budget of modern computing. The latency of electrical interconnects does not scale with transistor density; shorter transistor switching times are offset by longer wire delays across larger chips. And the bandwidth density of electrical I/O is approaching fundamental limits set by the skin effect, dielectric losses, and crosstalk.
Photons offer an escape. Light in an optical waveguide propagates with near-zero loss over chip-scale distances, at the speed of light in the medium (~200,000 km/s in silicon, vs. ~100,000 km/s for electrical signals in copper). Multiple wavelengths can be multiplexed onto a single waveguide (wavelength-division multiplexing, WDM), multiplying the bandwidth without adding wires. And—most provocatively—certain linear algebra operations, notably matrix-vector multiplication, can be performed directly in the optical domain, using interference and diffraction, without the sequential steps that digital multipliers require.
Optical computing spans a spectrum from the incremental (using silicon photonics for interconnects, replacing copper traces with optical waveguides) to the radical (all-optical neural networks where the entire forward pass of a deep network is performed by light propagating through a photonic integrated circuit). This article surveys the state of the art in optical computing: the silicon photonics platform, optical matrix multiplication architectures, the integration challenges that have kept optics out of the mainstream, and the emerging applications in AI inference and data center interconnects.
1. Why Optics? The Physics of the Advantage
The fundamental advantages of optics for computing derive from the physical properties of photons:
Speed. Light in a silicon waveguide travels at roughly (c / n*{\text{eff}} \approx 2 \times 10^8) m/s, where (n*{\text{eff}} \approx 1.5) is the effective refractive index. On a centimeter-scale photonic chip, the propagation delay is ~50 picoseconds—negligible compared to electronic gate delays (~10-100 ps per logic stage). For operations that can be performed “at the speed of light” (i.e., in a single pass through an optical system, without electronic conversion), the latency advantage is enormous.
Bandwidth. A single optical fiber can carry hundreds of wavelength channels (WDM), each modulated at 100+ Gbps. The aggregate bandwidth of a single fiber exceeds 10 Tbps, and a photonic chip with hundreds of waveguides can achieve petabit-per-second aggregate I/O bandwidth. This is 100-1000x the bandwidth density of electrical interconnects (which are limited to ~100 Gbps per differential pair at millimeter-scale pitches).
Energy. In an ideal optical system, the energy cost of transmitting a bit is set by the laser power, the modulator efficiency, and the photodetector sensitivity. State-of-the-art silicon photonic links achieve ~1 pJ/bit for on-chip communication and ~10 pJ/bit for chip-to-chip links, compared to ~10-100 pJ/bit for electrical links at comparable data rates. The energy advantage grows with distance: optical loss in a waveguide is ~0.1-1 dB/cm, while electrical loss in a copper trace grows exponentially with frequency, making electrical links infeasible beyond a few centimeters at >100 Gbps.
Linearity and interference. Photons do not interact with each other in a linear medium (they pass through without scattering). This means that multiple optical signals can coexist in the same waveguide without crosstalk, and that optical interference—the precise addition and cancellation of electric fields—is a linear, lossless, femtojoule-energy operation that can perform matrix-vector multiplication natively. This last property is what enables optical neural networks.
2. The Silicon Photonics Platform
Silicon photonics is the technology that makes optical computing economically viable. It uses the same CMOS fabrication infrastructure that produces electronic chips to manufacture photonic devices—waveguides, modulators, photodetectors, and grating couplers—on silicon wafers.
Key silicon photonic components:
Waveguides: Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides with a silicon core (~500 nm wide, ~220 nm thick) surrounded by silicon dioxide cladding. MZIs can modulate the amplitude of an optical carrier at 50-100 GHz, encoding data onto the light.
Photodetectors: Germanium photodiodes integrated on silicon, with responsivities of ~1 A/W and bandwidths exceeding 100 GHz.
Lasers: Currently, the laser source is typically external (an III-V semiconductor laser, e.g., InP, coupled to the silicon chip via a fiber or a flip-chip bond). Integrating lasers on silicon (heterogeneous integration of III-V materials on SOI) is an active research area; commercial solutions exist but add cost.
The maturity of the silicon photonics platform has led to commercial products: Intel’s silicon photonics transceivers (100G CWDM4, 400G FR4) have shipped millions of units, primarily for data center interconnects. The same platform is now being extended to on-chip and chip-to-chip optical interconnects (Intel’s Optical Compute Interconnect, OCI, for chiplet-based processors) and to optical accelerators.
3. Optical Matrix Multiplication: The Killer Application for AI
The most exciting application of optical computing is optical matrix-vector multiplication for AI inference. A deep neural network’s forward pass is dominated by matrix multiplications: each layer computes (y = Wx + b) where (W) is a weight matrix and (x) is an activation vector. On digital hardware (GPUs, TPUs), this requires (O(n^2)) multiply-accumulate operations, consuming energy and taking time proportional to the matrix size.
In optics, matrix-vector multiplication can be performed in a single pass using a photonic mesh of Mach-Zehnder interferometers. The idea, due to Reck et al. (1994) and refined by Clements et al. (2016), is that any unitary matrix can be decomposed into a product of (2 \times 2) unitary transformations (Givens rotations), each implemented by an MZI with two phase shifters. An array of MZIs arranged in a triangular or rectangular mesh implements an arbitrary unitary matrix.
The computation proceeds as follows:
- Encode the input vector (x) as optical amplitudes on (n) input waveguides (using modulators).
- Pass the light through the MZI mesh, which performs the unitary transformation (U). The entire computation is performed at the speed of light, with the only latency being the propagation delay through the mesh (picoseconds) plus the detector and analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) time (nanoseconds). The energy cost is dominated by the laser power, the modulator drive energy, and the ADC energy.
3.1 Energetic and Throughput Projections
The theoretical energy efficiency of optical matrix multiplication is extraordinary. A photonic tensor core operating at 10 GHz (10 billion inferences per second) with 100 input channels, performing a (100 \times 100) matrix multiply per inference, would achieve ~10 TOPS (tera-operations per second) with laser power of ~100 mW and modulator/ADC power of ~1 W—roughly 10 TOPS/W, which is competitive with digital accelerators. The advantage grows for larger matrices: the optical mesh’s energy scales as (O(n)) (for the modulators and detectors) while the computation performed scales as (O(n^2)), giving an energy per MAC that decreases with matrix size.
However, these projections assume idealized components and ignore critical loss mechanisms: waveguide propagation loss (~1-3 dB/cm, which accumulates in large meshes), MZI insertion loss (~0.1-1 dB per MZI, also accumulating), and coupling losses (fiber-to-chip, chip-to-detector). For a mesh with hundreds of MZIs, the cumulative loss can be 10-30 dB, requiring higher laser power or optical amplifiers to maintain signal integrity. These losses erode the energy advantage.
4. Mathematical Foundations of MZI Mesh Decomposition
The ability of an MZI mesh to implement an arbitrary unitary matrix rests on a profound result in linear algebra: any unitary matrix can be factored into a product of Givens rotations, each of which is physically realized by a single Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Optical matrix multiplication is an analog computation subject to fundamental and technological noise sources. This section derives the information-theoretic limits on precision and shows why optical computing is currently limited to ~4-6 effective bits.
5.1 Noise Sources in Photonic Systems

For inference with quantization-aware training (where networks are trained to be robust to 4-6 bit weight/activation precision), optical accelerators can match digital accuracy. For training, where gradient accumulation requires 16+ bits, optical computing is currently infeasible without hybrid precision schemes (e.g., optical forward pass with digital backward pass).
5.4 Information-Theoretic Capacity of an Optical Matrix Multiplier
