Every microservice call is a queue. Every load balancer decision is a queue. Every database connection pool, thread pool executor, and NIC ring buffer is a queue. The mathematics that governs these structures is not optional — it is the physics of your system.

1. Every System Is a Queue

Consider an HTTP request arriving at a web server. It enters the kernel’s TCP accept queue. Then it moves to the application’s event loop or thread pool queue. The handler queries a database, so the request enters the database connection pool’s wait queue. The database receives the query, which enters its internal query queue. The database reads from disk, so the request enters the disk I/O scheduler’s queue. Every single hop is a queue, and every queue imposes delay.
Now consider a modern microservice architecture. A user request fans out to twenty backend services. Each service has its own thread pool, its own connection pools, its own internal queues. The end-to-end latency experienced by the user is the sum of the waiting times across all these queues — and crucially, if any single queue is operating near saturation, that queue’s waiting time dominates the sum. This is why “average utilization looks fine” is a pernicious lie: a single saturated queue in a chain of twenty is sufficient to destroy your SLO.
The language we need to describe all of this comes from the mathematical theory of queues, born in the early twentieth century from the work of Agner Krarup Erlang on telephone exchange dimensioning, and matured through the contributions of Kendall, Little, Jackson, Kingman, and countless others. The notation and results that follow are not historical curiosities; they are the sharpest tools we have for thinking about latency, throughput, and capacity.
2. Little’s Law: The Universal Conservation Principle
We begin with the most powerful and underappreciated result in performance analysis: Little’s Law. It is so simple that engineers often dismiss it. That is a mistake.
Let (L) be the average number of requests in a system (queue + service). Let (\lambda) be the average arrival rate (requests per unit time). Let (W) be the average time a request spends in the system. Little’s Law states:

That is the entire result. But its power lies in what it does not require. Little’s Law holds under almost no assumptions. It does not assume Poisson arrivals. It does not assume exponential service times. It does not assume a particular queueing discipline (FIFO, LIFO, processor sharing — all fine). It does not even assume the system is stable, only that the relevant limits exist. It is a conservation law: work enters at rate (\lambda), spends time (W) inside, and therefore on average (L = \lambda W) units of work are present.
2.1 Why Little’s Law Is a Superpower
Suppose your production system has 8 application servers, each running 40 worker threads, and you observe an average of 300 occupied threads across the fleet. Your average request latency is 120ms. What is your throughput?
By Little’s Law, (L = \lambda W). Here (L = 300) requests in flight, (W = 0.120) seconds, so (\lambda = L / W = 300 / 0.120 = 2500) requests per second. That is your average throughput. No distributed tracing needed. No integration with your load generator. Just a single observation of concurrency and latency.
Conversely, suppose you are planning capacity. You need to serve 10,000 requests per second at a target latency of 50ms. Little’s Law tells you immediately that you need (L = \lambda W = 10000 \times 0.050 = 500) requests in flight on average. If your thread pool can handle 500 concurrent requests without contention, you can meet the target. If it cannot, you need more servers, less work per request, or both.
2.2 The System Boundary Trick
Little’s Law applies to any stable system boundary. You can apply it to the entire request path (arrival at the load balancer to response sent). You can apply it to just the database tier. You can apply it to just the disk I/O queue. The trick to effective use is choosing the boundary that answers your question.
If the database connection pool has an average of 12 busy connections and each query takes 8ms on average, then the query arrival rate is (\lambda = L / W = 12 / 0.008 = 1500) queries per second. If the application server shows 500 concurrent requests and the end-to-end latency is 200ms, the request arrival rate is 2500 per second. If these two numbers disagree significantly, you have found either a measurement error or an architectural mismatch (e.g., caching effects not captured by your sampling).
2.3 Little’s Law and the Danger of Hidden Queues
A subtle danger: Little’s Law counts only requests inside the system boundary. If your load balancer has an external queue (e.g., a backlog of TCP connections waiting to be accepted), those are not inside the application server boundary and will not appear in your in-flight count — but they absolutely contribute to user-perceived latency. This is why measuring latency at the client side and comparing it to server-side (W) is a crucial operational practice. Any gap between the two is a queue you are not monitoring.
3. The M/M/1 Queue: Memorylessness and Its Consequences
The M/M/1 queue is the “hello world” of queueing theory. It is simple enough to solve in closed form, yet rich enough to teach us lessons that apply to every production system we will ever build. Let us derive it carefully.
3.1 Kendall’s Notation
Kendall’s notation describes a queue as A/S/c/K/N/D, where:
- A: arrival process (M = Markovian, i.e., Poisson; D = deterministic; G = general)

In practice, many real-world arrival processes are well-approximated by Poisson at coarse timescales, though significant deviations exist (e.g., scheduled cron jobs, flash crowds, TCP slow-start bursts).
3.3 Exponential Service Times
The exponential distribution with rate (\mu) has density (f(t) = \mu e^{-\mu t}) for (t \geq 0). Its mean is (1/\mu), its variance is (1/\mu^2), and its squared coefficient of variation (C^2 = \text{Var}[S] / E[S]^2) is exactly 1. Like the Poisson process, it is memoryless:

At 90% utilization, the average customer sees 10 times the raw service time in total system time. At 99%, it is 100 times. At 99.9%, it is 1000 times. The curve is not linear — it is hyperbolic. Every additional percent of utilization beyond about 70% costs disproportionately more in latency.
4.2 Why This Catches Teams Off Guard
The most common failure mode: a team observes 60% CPU utilization, declares there is “40% headroom,” and greenlights a feature that doubles traffic. Utilization goes to 120% (transiently), then settles at perhaps 95% after the overload sheds some requests. But at 95% utilization, (L = 19) — meaning the queue is, on average, 19 requests deep. Latency explodes. Alerts fire. The team is confused because “CPU is not even at 100%.”
The lesson: utilization is not a linear resource meter. You must design for a target utilization that keeps latency acceptable under your maximum expected load. For latency-sensitive services, this often means targeting 50-60% utilization at peak, not 80-90%.
4.3 The Kingman Approximation for General Queues
Real service times are not exponential. Kingman’s approximation for the G/G/1 queue (general arrivals, general service) gives:

This is the statistical multiplexing gain: a larger pool of servers handles bursts more gracefully than a small pool at the same per-server utilization.
5.2 The Pooling Principle
The mean queue length for M/M/k (when stable) is:

Notice that the denominator still has (1 - \rho), so the utilization cliff remains. But pooling reduces the numerator via (C(k, \rho)), which shrinks as (k) grows.
Engineering implication: a single large thread pool beats several small thread pools at the same total capacity, because the single pool multiplexes bursts across all servers. This is why connection pooling, thread pooling, and consolidating services onto larger instances (within reason) can improve latency. The countervailing force is that very large pools encounter coordination overhead (contention on shared data structures, NUMA effects), so there is a sweet spot.

5.3 Connection to Thread Pool Sizing
Suppose your service has a mean request processing time of 5ms, and you expect a peak arrival rate of 2000 requests per second. The offered load is (\lambda / \mu = 2000 / 200 = 10) servers worth of work. How many threads should you allocate?
If you allocate exactly 10 threads, (\rho = 1.0) and latency goes to infinity (queue grows unbounded). If you allocate 12 threads, (\rho = 10/12 \approx 0.833). Using the Erlang C formula with (k = 12) and (\rho = 0.833), the probability of waiting is approximately 0.37. The mean waiting time is (W_q = C(k, \rho) / (k\mu - \lambda) = 0.37 / (2400 - 2000) = 0.37 / 400 \approx 0.93)ms. Total mean latency: (W = W_q + 1/\mu = 0.93 + 5 = 5.93)ms. That seems fine.
But what if traffic spikes to 2200 requests per second? Now (\rho = 2200 / 2400 \approx 0.917). (C(12, 0.917) \approx 0.65). (W_q = 0.65 / (2400 - 2200) = 0.65 / 200 = 3.25)ms. Total latency: 8.25ms. Still okay.
At 2350 req/s? (\rho = 2350/2400 \approx 0.979). (W_q = 0.85 / 50 = 17)ms. We are on the steep part of the curve. At 2390 req/s, latency goes to 85ms. This is the utilization cliff in action, and it is why thread pools sized too tightly become the bottleneck in a microservice chain faster than almost anything else.
6. Phase-Type Distributions and Realistic Service Times
The exponential distribution is mathematically convenient but empirically false for most real systems. Service times often have lower variance than exponential (e.g., fixed-sized request processing) or dramatically higher variance (e.g., requests whose time depends on cache state, disk seeks, or GC pauses).
6.1 Phase-Type Distributions
A phase-type (PH) distribution models a service process as a Markov chain with an absorbing state. The time to absorption is the service time. Examples:
- Erlang-k: The sum of (k) i.i.d. exponential phases, each with rate (k\mu). Mean is (1/\mu), variance is (1/(k\mu^2)), and (C^2 = 1/k). As (k \to \infty), the Erlang-k distribution approaches the deterministic distribution (constant service time). This models services with low variability.
- Hyperexponential: A mixture of exponentials with different rates. (C^2 > 1). This models services where some requests are fast and some are slow (e.g., cache hits vs. misses).
By choosing the right phase-type distribution, we can match the first two moments (mean and variance) of empirically observed service times and obtain much more accurate queueing predictions than M/M/1.
6.2 The M/E_k/1 Queue
For Erlang-k service times, the queue length distribution is more complex than M/M/1 but the mean waiting time has a simple form:

This is a massive practical difference: services with predictable, constant request processing times degrade much more gracefully under load.
6.3 The M/H_2/1 Queue
For a hyperexponential distribution with two phases (a simple model of cache-hit-fast, cache-miss-slow), the variance can be enormous. If 95% of requests take 1ms and 5% take 100ms, the mean is (0.95 \times 1 + 0.05 \times 100 = 5.95)ms, but the second moment is (0.95 \times 1^2 + 0.05 \times 100^2 = 500.95), giving (C_s^2 = \text{Var}/E^2 \approx (500.95 - 35.4) / 35.4 \approx 13.1). Such a high (C_s^2) dramatically amplifies queueing delay. The queue behaves as if it is at much higher utilization than the mean service rate would suggest.
This is why cache miss ratios don’t just affect the requests that miss — they increase latency for all requests by bloating the queue. A single slow request blocks the queue for everyone behind it, even if most requests are fast. This is the “head-of-line blocking” problem, and it is one reason that request isolation (separate queues for fast and slow operations) is essential in performance-critical systems.
7. The Pollaczek-Khinchine Formula: Why Variance Matters
The most important formula that most systems engineers have never heard of is the Pollaczek-Khinchine (P-K) formula for the M/G/1 queue. M/G/1 means Poisson arrivals, general service time distribution, one server. The P-K formula gives the mean queue length:

This means that if your service time variance doubles, your mean queueing delay doubles. If your service time variance increases by a factor of 10 (e.g., due to GC pauses or cache misses), your mean queueing delay increases by a factor of roughly 5. This is a first-order effect, not a subtle correction.
7.2 Measuring C_s^2 in Production
To use the P-K formula, you need to measure (C_s^2) of your service times. Most monitoring systems give you the mean, the median, and perhaps P95 and P99. None of these directly give you the variance. You need:
C_s^2 = Var[S] / E[S]^2
where:
Var[S] = E[S^2] - E[S]^2
So you need the second moment (E[S^2]). This requires either:
- Exporting a histogram of service times from your application and computing moments from bucket counts
- Computing a running estimate of both (E[S]) and (E[S^2]) using exponentially weighted moving averages
- Sampling raw service times and computing sample moments
Without (C_s^2), you cannot predict how your queue will behave under load. The mean alone is insufficient. This is not a theoretical concern — it is a measurement gap that causes real production incidents.
7.3 The P-K Formula for Mean Queue Length (Alternative Form)
It is also instructive to write the P-K formula in terms of the second moment of the service time distribution directly:

8. Heavy-Tailed Distributions and the Collapse of Gaussian Intuition
Here we arrive at the most dangerous territory in performance engineering: heavy-tailed service time distributions. Most engineers are trained to think in terms of normal distributions and standard deviations. But in computer systems, service times are often not just “variable” — they are heavy-tailed, meaning the tail of the distribution decays polynomially rather than exponentially. This changes everything.
8.1 Defining Heavy Tails
A distribution (F) is heavy-tailed if:

Equivalently, the tail (1 - F(x)) decays more slowly than any exponential. The Pareto distribution is the canonical example:

Real computer system measurements have found Pareto-like behavior with (\alpha) between 1.1 and 1.8 for many phenomena: file sizes on web servers, process lifetimes in UNIX, packet inter-arrival times in some network traffic. This means infinite variance is not a mathematical curiosity — it is a reasonable empirical model for certain system workloads.
8.2 Why Heavy Tails Devastate Queues
Consider an M/G/1 queue where the service time distribution is Pareto with (\alpha = 1.5). The mean (E[S] = \alpha x_m / (\alpha - 1) = 3 x_m) is finite, so we can define (\rho) and the queue is stable for (\rho < 1). But the second moment (E[S^2] = \alpha x_m^2 / (\alpha - 2)) is infinite (since (\alpha < 2)).
The P-K formula says (L_q) depends on (E[S^2]). If (E[S^2] = \infty), the mean queue length is infinite. The queue is not stable in any meaningful sense. In practice, of course, service times are bounded (by timeouts, by finite machine resources), so (E[S^2]) is finite — but it is enormous, and the queue behaves pathologically.
The practical manifestation: a small fraction of requests take orders of magnitude longer than the median. These “stragglers” cause head-of-line blocking. When you have fan-out (one user request spawning many backend requests), the probability that at least one backend request hits a straggler grows rapidly with the fan-out degree (d):

The log-normal distribution is another common model for system phenomena. A random variable (X) is log-normal if (\ln X \sim \mathcal{N}(\mu, \sigma^2)). The log-normal has finite moments of all orders, unlike the Pareto, but its squared coefficient of variation grows exponentially with (\sigma^2):

8.4 Empirical Evidence: The Tail-at-Scale Problem
Jeff Dean and Luiz André Barroso’s landmark paper “The Tail at Scale” (2013) documented that in Google’s production systems, the P99 latency of individual components might be modest (e.g., 10ms), but when a user request fans out to 100 such components, the P99 of the user-visible latency can be 100ms or more — not because any single component is slow, but because the probability of hitting at least one slow component compounds. This is the “tail at scale” problem, and it is a direct consequence of the mathematics we have just developed.
The tail at scale problem is exacerbated by:
- Correlated stragglers: Slowdowns are often not independent. A GC pause on one machine, a network blip, or a burst of retries can affect many requests simultaneously.
- Amplification by retries: If a timeout fires and the request is retried, the slow component now has two requests in flight, doubling its load and making the problem worse.
- Synchronization points: Barrier-like operations (e.g., “gather responses from all 100 backends before computing the result”) ensure that the slowest component determines the end-to-end latency.
9. Networks of Queues: Jackson Networks and Microservice Chains
A single queue is instructive. But modern systems are networks of queues. A request arrives at a load balancer, is dispatched to a frontend, which calls an authentication service, which queries a user database, which checks a cache, then the frontend calls a business logic service, which calls two more databases and an external API. Each hop is a queue. The entire graph is a queueing network.
9.1 Jackson Networks
A Jackson network is a network of (J) queues where:
- Each queue (j) has exponential service with rate (\mu_j) (may depend on the number of customers at queue (j))
- Arrivals from outside the network to queue (j) form a Poisson process with rate (\lambda_j^{(0)})
- After completing service at queue (i), a customer goes to queue (j) with probability (r*{ij}) or leaves the network with probability (1 - \sum_j r*{ij})
- Routing is Markovian (memoryless)

9.3 Why Jackson Networks Matter for Microservices
Consider a microservice architecture as a directed graph. Each node is a service, each edge is an RPC call. The external arrival rate at the API gateway is known. The routing probabilities can be estimated from distributed tracing data. The service rates can be measured from server-side latency histograms.
With this information, you can solve the traffic equations and compute the utilization (\rho_j) at every service. You can identify the bottleneck service (the one with the highest (\rho_j)) and predict how latency will change if you add capacity or route traffic differently. This is capacity planning with mathematical rigor rather than guesswork.
The caveat: Jackson networks assume exponential service times and Markovian routing, which are approximations. But even with these approximations, the analysis provides a far better starting point than intuition alone.
9.4 End-to-End Latency in Tandem Queues
For a simple tandem (sequential) network of M/M/1 queues, the end-to-end sojourn time is the sum of the sojourn times at each queue. But these times are not independent — a customer’s departure from queue 1 becomes its arrival at queue 2, which introduces correlation. Nevertheless, for Poisson arrivals at the first queue and exponential service, the output process of an M/M/1 queue is itself Poisson (Burke’s theorem), so each downstream queue sees Poisson arrivals at the same rate.
For a tandem of (K) identical M/M/1 queues, each with service rate (\mu) and arrival rate (\lambda), the mean end-to-end latency is:

The utilization cliff is amplified by (K): if each queue operates at (\rho = 0.9), the mean end-to-end latency is (10K) times the raw service time. For (K = 10), that’s 100x. This is the mathematical basis for the observation that deep microservice call chains are latency multipliers.
10. The Power of Two Choices and Load Balancing
Load balancing is the art of distributing arrivals across servers to minimize queueing delay. The simplest policy — random assignment — is surprisingly good. But there is a better policy with remarkably strong theoretical guarantees.
10.1 Random vs. Round-Robin vs. Join-Shortest-Queue
- Random: Each arrival is assigned to a random server. This is stateless and simple but ignores queue lengths.
- Round-robin: Arrivals cycle through servers. This balances the count of arrivals but not the load (since service times vary).
- Join-Shortest-Queue (JSQ): Each arrival is assigned to the server with the fewest queued requests. This is near-optimal but requires global knowledge of queue lengths, which is expensive in distributed systems.
10.2 The Power of Two Choices
The power of two choices (Mitzenmacher, 1996) is an elegant result: if you sample two servers at random and assign the arrival to the one with the shorter queue, the maximum queue length grows as (O(\log \log n)) with (n) servers under certain conditions, compared to (O(\log n / \log \log n)) for random assignment. This is an exponential improvement in tail behavior.
The algorithm:

In practice, this can be implemented by having the load balancer track the number of outstanding requests per backend and choosing between two backends at dispatch time.
10.3 The Join-Idle-Queue Variant
For systems where many servers are idle (low to moderate load), the Join-Idle-Queue (JIQ) policy is even better: maintain a list of idle servers. When an arrival occurs, assign it to an idle server if one exists; otherwise, use the power of two choices. This combines the efficiency of JSQ at low load with the scalability of power-of-two at high load.
10.4 Practical Load Balancing: Consistent Hashing and Its Queueing Implications
In practice, load balancers often use consistent hashing to ensure that requests with the same key (e.g., user ID) go to the same backend (for cache affinity). Consistent hashing minimizes the number of reassignments when servers are added or removed, but it does not consider queue lengths. The result is load imbalance: some servers get “hot” keys and develop deep queues while others are idle.
The engineering answer is to combine consistent hashing for cache affinity with a secondary mechanism that sheds load from overloaded servers. For example:
- Use consistent hashing as the primary routing mechanism
- Monitor queue depth at each server
- When a server’s queue exceeds a threshold, redirect a fraction of its traffic to other servers (accepting the cache miss penalty as better than the queueing delay penalty)
This is an admission control / load shedding strategy motivated directly by queueing theory.
11. Priority Queueing and the cμ Rule
Not all requests are equally important. Some need low latency (user-facing interactive requests). Others can tolerate delay (batch processing, analytics). Priority queueing formalizes how to schedule different classes of work to minimize a cost function.
11.1 Preemptive and Non-Preemptive Priority Queues
In a non-preemptive priority queue, a high-priority arrival must wait for the currently in-service customer to complete, but then it jumps to the head of the queue. In a preemptive priority queue, a high-priority arrival interrupts the service of a lower-priority customer immediately.
For an M/G/1 queue with (K) priority classes (class 1 highest, class K lowest), the mean waiting time for class (p) under non-preemptive priority is:

Suppose each class (i) has a holding cost (c_i) per unit time spent in the system. We want to minimize the long-run average cost. The cμ rule (also known as the Smith rule) says: serve the class with the highest (c_i \mu_i) first, where (\mu_i = 1 / E[S_i]). This minimizes the average cost per unit time.
Intuitively: prioritize jobs that are both expensive to delay (high (c_i)) and quick to serve (high (\mu_i)). A job that is expensive but slow might still be deprioritized if it blocks many cheap, fast jobs.
11.3 Engineering Priority Queues
Most thread pool implementations are FIFO. Adding priority requires either:
- Multiple thread pools with different priorities (and admission control to prevent low-priority starvation)
- A priority queue data structure as the work queue (e.g.,
java.util.concurrent.PriorityBlockingQueue) - Separate service instances for latency-critical and batch workloads
The operational key is to ensure that high-priority traffic cannot consume 100% of capacity, or low-priority traffic starves completely. This is typically enforced via weighted fair queueing or by reserving a minimum fraction of capacity for each priority class.
12. Tail-at-Scale: Dean and Barroso’s Insight as Queueing Theory
We have built all the machinery we need to understand the tail-at-scale problem in its full mathematical depth.
12.1 The Fan-Out Amplification Formula
Consider a service that fans out a user request to (d) backend services. Let (F_i(t)) be the CDF of the response time of backend (i). The end-to-end response time is (T = \max{T_1, T_2, \ldots, T_d}) (assuming all backends can be queried in parallel). The CDF of (T) is:

For (d = 100), (F(t_{0.99}) = 0.99^{0.01} \approx 0.9999). This means that to achieve P99 at the user level, each backend must deliver P99.99. A backend with P99 is insufficient — you have pushed the latency target two nines further out. This is the fan-out tax.
12.2 Hedged Requests
A hedged request (or “tied request” in the Dean & Barroso paper) is a powerful mitigation: send the same request to two (or more) backends, and use whichever responds first. If response times are independent, the latency of the hedged request is the minimum of the individual latencies:

For independent exponential response times with rate (\mu), the mean latency drops from (1/\mu) to (1/(2\mu)) — a factor of 2 improvement. But the real win is in the tail. For M/M/1 response times:

The decay rate doubles and the coefficient becomes (\rho^2) instead of (\rho). The tail of the hedged request is exponentially thinner.
The cost is additional load: hedging with two backends doubles the offered load. This is acceptable if the system has spare capacity, but catastrophic if it’s already near saturation. The engineering nuance is to hedge only when the first response has not arrived within a threshold (e.g., the P95 latency), not immediately. This is called “deferred hedging” and achieves most of the tail improvement with a modest load increase.

12.3 Micro-Batching and the Straggler Problem
In systems like MapReduce and Spark, a job is divided into many tasks, and the job completes when the last task completes. This is fan-out at the task level. Straggler tasks (tasks that take much longer than the median) determine the job completion time. The standard mitigation is speculative execution: launch a duplicate copy of a straggler task on another machine and use whichever finishes first.
Speculative execution is exactly hedged requests applied at the batch level, and the same queueing-theoretic analysis applies. The challenge is detecting stragglers without waiting too long (which defeats the purpose) or launching speculative copies too aggressively (which wastes resources). Systems like Spark use heuristics based on the progress rate of tasks relative to the median.
13. Engineering Applications: Thread Pools, Load Balancers, SLOs
We now distill the theory into concrete engineering guidance.
13.1 Thread Pool Sizing
The formula: let (\lambda*{\text{peak}}) be your peak arrival rate, (E[S]) be your mean service time, and (\rho*{\text{max}}) be your maximum acceptable utilization (typically 0.5 to 0.7 for latency-sensitive services). Then the number of threads needed is:

Then add a safety margin (20-30%) for variance. Verify with the Erlang C formula that (C(k, \rho) < 0.1) (less than 10% probability of waiting). Monitor actual (C_s^2) of your service times and increase (k) if (C_s^2) is large.
Never run thread pools with fewer threads than the number of CPU cores available for CPU-bound work. For I/O-bound work, the optimal number of threads is much larger and is governed by the ratio of I/O wait time to CPU time (the “thread factor”).
13.2 Load Balancer Configuration
The key parameters:
- Algorithm: Power of two choices (or least connections) for general workloads. Consistent hashing with overflow for cache-affine workloads.
- Max connections per backend: Set such that the per-backend utilization stays below (\rho_{\text{max}}). This is a hard limit that triggers load shedding or 503 responses rather than allowing unbounded queueing.
- Health checks: Active health checks (periodic probes) detect dead backends. Passive health checks (observing response failures) detect degraded backends. The check interval determines detection latency.
13.3 SLO Setting
An SLO (Service Level Objective) is a latency target: “99% of requests complete within 100ms.” To set this target:
- Measure the service time distribution (F_S(t)) at each hop in the request path.
- Model each hop as an M/G/1 queue (or use measured data directly) to get the response time distribution (F_R(t)).
- Account for fan-out: if the user request fans out to (d) backends, the end-to-end latency CDF is (\prod F_R^{(i)}(t)).
- Choose the SLO such that the probability of violation, under peak load, is acceptable (typically 0.1% to 1%).
The math is not optional here. Guessing an SLO and then failing to meet it 5% of the time means you either set the wrong SLO or need to change your architecture. In either case, you need the queueing model to understand which.
13.4 Admission Control and Load Shedding
When (\rho) approaches 1, queueing delay diverges. The only correct response is to shed load. Admission control mechanisms:
- Queue length threshold: If the queue length exceeds (L*{\text{max}}), reject new arrivals with 503. (L*{\text{max}}) can be set based on the acceptable waiting time: (L*{\text{max}} \approx \lambda \cdot W*{\text{max}}) by Little’s Law.
- Latency-based shedding: If the observed P50 latency exceeds a threshold, start rejecting a fraction of requests proportional to the excess.
- Graceful degradation: Instead of full rejection, serve a degraded response (e.g., cached stale data, reduced feature set) that is faster to compute.
The queueing-theoretic principle is clear: it is better to reject a small fraction of requests explicitly (giving clients a fast error) than to accept them and let them time out after queuing for seconds, consuming resources the whole time.
14. Conclusion: Thinking in Queues
