Instead, he showed that if you pick a random graph from a suitable distribution, the probability that it has both properties is positive. Therefore, such a graph must exist — because if the probability of something is greater than zero, that something cannot be impossible.
This is the probabilistic method in its purest form: to prove that an object with certain properties exists, show that a randomly chosen object (from an appropriately defined probability space) has those properties with non-zero probability. - Formulate the problem as an integer linear program (ILP).
- Solve the LP relaxation (allowing fractional values) in polynomial time.
- Round fractional variables to integers randomly, with probabilities proportional to the fractional values.

Example: MAX-SAT. Given a CNF formula, find an assignment maximizing the number of satisfied clauses. 4.2 Load Balancing and the Power of Two Choices
Recall the balls-into-bins model. In distributed systems, “bins” might be servers and “balls” might be incoming requests or data items. The naive strategy — assign each request to a random server — yields a maximum load of (\Theta(\frac{\log n}{\log \log n})) with high probability.
The power of two choices strategy: for each ball, sample (d \geq 2) bins uniformly at random and place the ball in the least loaded among them. For (d = 2), the maximum load collapses to (\Theta(\log \log n)). This is exactly the collision probability of a perfectly random hash function, yet universal hash families can be implemented with simple arithmetic and require only (O(\log m)) random bits.

In join-the-shortest-queue (JSQ) policies for server farms, each incoming job queries (d) servers and joins the shortest queue. This means that at moderate load (say, 80% utilization), the probability of experiencing a long queue drops from non-negligible to astronomically small.

Randomized algorithms are powerful, but they leave a philosophical question: can we always remove the randomness without sacrificing efficiency? This is the (\mathsf{P}) vs (\mathsf{BPP}) question — whether every problem solvable by a randomized polynomial-time algorithm with bounded error ((\mathsf{BPP})) can also be solved deterministically in polynomial time ((\mathsf{P})). The prevailing belief is that (\mathsf{P} = \mathsf{BPP}) — randomness does not fundamentally expand the class of efficiently solvable problems — but proving this remains a major open problem.
5.1 The Method of Conditional Expectations
Many randomized existence proofs can be made algorithmic and deterministic via the method of conditional expectations. Full independence requires (n) random bits for (n) variables. Often, pairwise independence (or (k)-wise independence for small (k)) suffices while requiring only (O(\log n)) random bits. A family of hash functions (\mathcal{H}) from (U) to ([m]) is pairwise independent if for any distinct (x, y \in U) and any (a, b \in [m]):
