Scheduling. Distributed cron jobs, lease renewal, cache expiration — all require some shared notion of time. If a cache entry expires at time T on server A and time T+10s on server B, clients see inconsistent data for 10 seconds.
2. NTP: Marzullo’s Algorithm and the Workhorse of Internet Time
The Network Time Protocol (NTP) has been synchronizing computer clocks since 1985. NTPv4, the current standard (RFC 5905), achieves millisecond-level accuracy on local networks and tens-of-milliseconds accuracy on the global internet. It does this with a remarkably simple algorithm.

This is sufficient for log timestamps, certificate expiration checks, and casual ordering, but it is not sufficient for distributed transaction ordering (where sub-millisecond accuracy is needed) or for high-frequency financial trading (where microsecond accuracy is required by regulation).
3. PTP: IEEE 1588 and Hardware Timestamping
The Precision Time Protocol (PTP), standardized as IEEE 1588, achieves sub-microsecond to nanosecond accuracy by moving the timestamping from software to hardware. In NTP, timestamps are taken at the application level — the t1 timestamp is recorded when sendto() returns, which can be hundreds of microseconds after the packet actually left the NIC. In PTP, timestamps are taken by the NIC hardware at the moment the packet crosses the physical layer — the start-of-frame delimiter on Ethernet. This eliminates the software jitter that dominates NTP errors.
PTP uses a master-slave hierarchy: one grandmaster clock (typically a GPS-disciplined oscillator) distributes time to boundary clocks (which act as slaves to the grandmaster and masters to downstream devices) and transparent clocks (which measure the residence time of PTP messages through a switch and add it to a correction field). The two-step mode (Sync + Follow_Up) allows the master to send the precise t1 timestamp after the Sync message, which is necessary because the timestamp is taken by hardware but the packet must include it at the software level. In one-step mode (supported by some hardware), the Sync message carries the timestamp directly.
The slave computes the offset the same way as NTP:

The key to PTP’s precision is the transparent clock. A conventional Ethernet switch introduces variable latency (from queuing, buffering, and store-and-forward delays). A PTP transparent clock measures the residence time — the time between receiving a PTP message on an ingress port and transmitting it on an egress port — and adds it to the correction field in the PTP message. The slave subtracts the accumulated correction from the round-trip delay, effectively removing the switch latency from the measurement. This allows PTP to achieve nanosecond accuracy even through a chain of switches.
PTP is widely used in telecommunications (synchronizing cell towers), financial trading (synchronizing exchange servers for audit trails), and industrial automation (synchronizing sensors and actuators). It is also used in some data centers — notably, Google’s data centers use PTP as part of the TrueTime infrastructure.
4. Google TrueTime and Spanner
TrueTime is Google’s solution to the clock synchronization problem, and it is one of the most elegant pieces of systems engineering in the past two decades. The problem it solves is this: Spanner, Google’s globally distributed SQL database, needs to provide externally consistent transactions — if transaction T1 commits before transaction T2 starts, T1 must have a lower timestamp than T2. In a single-machine database, this is easy — the commit timestamp is the value of the local clock at commit time. In a distributed database spanning continents, where no two clocks agree perfectly, it is fundamentally harder.
TrueTime’s insight is to embrace uncertainty rather than eliminate it. Instead of trying to synchronize clocks perfectly, TrueTime provides each server with an interval [earliest, latest] within which the true time is guaranteed to lie. The API is:

Spanner uses TrueTime to assign commit timestamps. When a transaction starts, it gets a start timestamp s = TT.now().latest (a conservative upper bound on the current time). When it commits, it gets a commit timestamp c = TT.now().earliest (a conservative lower bound). If c > s, the transaction commits with timestamp c. If c <= s, the transaction must wait until TT.now().earliest > s — this is called “commit wait,” and it ensures that the commit timestamp is strictly greater than the start timestamp, which preserves external consistency. The commit wait time is at most the uncertainty ε, which is small enough that it does not materially affect latency for most transactions.

Optical clock networks. Research groups are developing optical clocks — clocks based on optical transitions in atoms (strontium, ytterbium) rather than microwave transitions (cesium). Cloudflare’s 2017 leap-second outage. On January 1, 2017, a leap second was inserted into UTC (the 27th leap second since the practice began in 1972). The year 2038 problem. Unix time (seconds since January 1, 1970) is stored as a signed 32-bit integer in many legacy systems.
