In 2012, a Swedish developer named Luke Gorrie released Snabb Switch, a user-space Ethernet switch written in Lua. It could process 10 Gbps of Ethernet traffic on commodity hardware, in user space, without kernel modifications. Snabb was an extreme expression of a philosophy that was gaining traction in the networking community: the kernel’s network stack is the bottleneck. If you want to process packets at line rate — millions of packets per second — you need to get the kernel out of the way. This post explores the architecture of user-space networking, from Snabb’s LuaJIT-based simplicity to VPP’s vectorized packet processing to AF_XDP’s pragmatic kernel bypass.

1. Why Bypass the Kernel?

The Linux kernel’s network stack is a marvel of generality. It supports hundreds of protocols, dozens of virtual and physical interface types, sophisticated firewalling (netfilter/iptables/nftables), connection tracking, NAT, tunneling, bridging, routing, traffic control, and socket multiplexing. It provides a uniform socket API that applications have relied on for decades. But this generality comes at a cost: per-packet overhead.

Consider the path of a single packet from the NIC to a user-space application in Linux:

  2. NIC raises an interrupt
  3. Kernel interrupt handler schedules NAPI (New API) polling
  4. NAPI poll routine dequeues packet from the ring buffer
  5. Kernel allocates an sk_buff (socket buffer) structure
  6. Packet data is copied (or mapped) into the sk_buff
  7. sk_buff traverses the netfilter hooks (iptables rules)
  8. sk_buff is routed (lookup in the routing table)
  9. sk_buff is delivered to the appropriate socket
  10. Socket layer copies packet data into the application’s buffer
  11. Application is woken up (via epoll/select/signal)

Each of these steps involves kernel data structures, locks, reference counting, and cache pollution. For a 64-byte TCP ACK at 10 Gbps line rate, you have about 67 nanoseconds per packet. Step 3 alone (the interrupt handler) can take hundreds of nanoseconds. The result is that the Linux kernel, out of the box, can process about 1-2 million packets per second per core. Line rate for 10 Gbps with minimum-sized packets is 14.88 million packets per second. The kernel is an order of magnitude too slow.

Kernel bypass eliminates most of these steps by giving the application direct access to the NIC’s DMA buffers and letting the application poll the NIC directly. The kernel is involved only in setup (configuring the NIC, mapping its registers and DMA buffers into the application’s address space) and not in the per-packet fast path.

2. Snabb Switch: LuaJIT and the Art of Minimalism

Snabb Switch was a radical demonstration that user-space networking didn’t require complex frameworks or specialized hardware. Written in Lua (running on LuaJIT, a tracing JIT for Lua), Snabb could process 10 Gbps of traffic on a single core using a remarkably simple architecture.

Snabb’s design was built around “apps” — small, composable components that each performed one networking function: receive packets from a NIC, filter by VLAN, learn MAC addresses, forward to the correct port, transmit to a NIC. Apps were connected in a directed graph, with packets flowing from app to app through shared memory links. Each app processed a batch of packets at a time, amortizing the overhead of function calls and cache misses.

Snabb’s NIC driver was the secret to its performance. It used direct I/O (mapping the NIC’s PCI BARs into user space) to access the NIC’s transmit and receive descriptor rings directly, without kernel involvement. The driver was about 2,000 lines of Lua, implementing just enough of the Intel 82599 (10 Gbps) NIC’s interface to send and receive packets. No interrupt handling, no scatter-gather DMA, no offload negotiation — just the essential registers and descriptor formats.

Snabb’s packet processing was inherently batch-oriented. The receive app would poll the NIC’s receive ring, dequeuing up to 128 packets at a time into a “packet array” (a Lua table of packet objects). Each downstream app would process all 128 packets in a tight loop, then pass the array to the next app. Batching amortized function call overhead, and the LuaJIT tracing JIT could compile the hot loops into tight native code.

The educational value of Snabb was immense. By reducing a 10 Gbps Ethernet switch to a few thousand lines of Lua, Snabb made kernel bypass accessible to programmers who would never read the Linux kernel’s network code. It demonstrated that the essential ideas — direct I/O, polling, batching — were simple and could be implemented in a high-level language with the help of a good JIT.

3. FD.io VPP: Vector Packet Processing

The Vector Packet Processing (VPP) project, part of the FD.io (Fast Data I/O) Linux Foundation project, takes batch-oriented packet processing to its logical extreme. VPP processes packets in vectors (arrays) rather than one at a time, and it arranges the processing graph so that each node in the graph processes the entire vector before passing it to the next node.

The key insight behind VPP is that processing packets one at a time is cache-unfriendly. When you process a packet, you access its headers, lookup tables (routing, MAC learning), and counters. These data structures evict each other from the cache. If you process the next packet immediately, you’ll likely miss the cache on the same data structures that you just accessed for the previous packet. But if you batch 256 packets and process the same operation for all of them — parse all 256 Ethernet headers, then do 256 route lookups, then update all 256 counters — the data structures stay in the cache, and you get near-perfect cache utilization.

VPP’s processing graph is a directed acyclic graph (DAG) of “nodes.” Each node performs one operation on a vector of packets: parse Ethernet, parse IPv4, route lookup, ARP resolution, transmit to interface. Nodes are written in C and compiled to native code. The graph is traversed depth-first: packet vectors flow through the graph, with each node processing the entire vector before the next node is invoked.

VPP’s performance is extraordinary. On a single core, VPP can process 15-20 million packets per second (enough to saturate a 10 Gbps link with minimum-sized packets). On a 16-core server with 100 Gbps NICs, VPP can process 200+ million packets per second. The combination of vectorization, cache-friendly access patterns, and efficient data structures (VPP uses its own memory allocator, hash tables, and timers, all optimized for the packet processing use case) achieves performance that the Linux kernel cannot match.

VPP is used in production by several large network operators. Cisco’s VPP-based products power some of their carrier-grade routers. The FD.io community maintains VPP as an open-source project with a growing ecosystem of plugins for new protocols and features.

4. AF_XDP: Kernel Bypass Without Breaking the Kernel

AF_XDP, introduced in Linux 4.18 (2018), offers a middle ground between full kernel bypass (DPDK, Snabb, VPP) and the traditional socket API. AF_XDP is a new address family (AF_XDP) that provides a zero-copy path for sending and receiving packets directly between a NIC and a user-space application, while still using the kernel for device management, configuration, and non-data-plane operations.

The AF_XDP architecture consists of:

  1. UMEM (User Memory): A contiguous region of memory allocated by the application, divided into fixed-size “chunks” (typically 2 KB or 4 KB). The UMEM is shared between the NIC and the application: the NIC DMAs packets into and out of UMEM chunks, and the application reads/writes packet data directly from/to UMEM.

  2. Fill Ring: A producer-consumer ring where the application places empty UMEM chunks for the NIC to use for receive. The application fills the Fill Ring with chunk addresses; the NIC consumes them when it receives packets.

  3. Completion Ring: The reverse: the NIC places UMEM chunks that have been transmitted (or that were unused from the Fill Ring) back onto the Completion Ring for the application to reuse.

  4. RX Ring: The NIC places received packets (UMEM chunk addresses + metadata) onto the RX Ring for the application to process.

  5. TX Ring: The application places packets to transmit (UMEM chunk addresses + metadata) onto the TX Ring for the NIC to send.

All four rings are lock-free single-producer-single-consumer ring buffers mapped into both kernel and user space. The application can poll them directly without system calls. The per-packet fast path involves only ring accesses and DMA operations — the kernel is not involved.

AF_XDP’s performance is competitive with DPDK: 15-20 million packets per second on a single core for simple packet forwarding. The advantage over DPDK is that AF_XDP cooperates with the kernel rather than replacing it. The kernel still manages the NIC, handles link state changes, configures offloads, and provides the standard interface for non-data-plane configuration. If the AF_XDP application crashes, the kernel takes over packet processing gracefully. In DPDK, if the application crashes, the NIC is left in an undefined state.

5. The Philosophy and Architecture Trade-offs

Kernel bypass networking embodies a philosophical stance: the kernel is a bottleneck for high-throughput, low-latency packet processing. By moving the data plane to user space, you eliminate kernel overhead and gain the ability to specialize your packet processing for your specific use case. But you also take on responsibilities that the kernel previously handled: buffer management, DMA synchronization, NIC hardware management, and security.

The trade-offs are:

  • Performance vs. generality: User-space networking is 5-10x faster than kernel networking for simple packet processing, but you lose the kernel’s support for hundreds of protocols, virtual devices, firewalling, and socket multiplexing. If your use case is simple (forward packets, filter packets, encapsulate/decapsulate), the trade-off is clear. If your use case requires the full richness of the Linux network stack, kernel bypass may not be worth the engineering cost.

  • Polling vs. interrupts: User-space networking uses polling (the application continuously checks for new packets), while kernel networking uses interrupts (the NIC interrupts the CPU when a packet arrives). Polling gives lower latency and higher throughput at the cost of continuous CPU utilization. For workloads that are always busy, polling is ideal. For bursty workloads, polling wastes CPU when there are no packets.

  • Safety vs. control: User-space networking gives applications direct access to NIC hardware (MMIO registers, DMA engines). A bug in the application can corrupt NIC state, cause DMA to wrong memory locations, or lock up the PCIe bus. The kernel provides safety by validating all hardware access.   • Portability vs. specialization: User-space networking often requires NIC-specific drivers (Snabb had drivers for a few Intel NICs; DPDK has drivers for dozens of NICs but requires DPDK-specific driver code). AF_XDP works with any NIC that has a kernel driver supporting XDP, which is an increasingly large set (most modern server NICs).

7. DPDK: The Heavyweight Champion of Kernel Bypass

The Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK), an open-source project hosted by the Linux Foundation, is the most widely deployed kernel bypass framework. DPDK provides user-space drivers for hundreds of NICs, libraries for buffer management (mempool), packet processing (mbuf), and lockless ring buffers, and an Environment Abstraction Layer (EAL) that handles hardware initialization, memory management, and thread pinning.

DPDK’s NIC drivers operate entirely in user space, using the kernel’s UIO (Userspace I/O) or VFIO (Virtual Function I/O) frameworks to map NIC registers and DMA buffers into the application’s address space. The kernel is completely removed from the data path after initialization. DPDK applications poll the NIC’s receive and transmit rings in a tight loop (typically with one thread per CPU core pinned to a dedicated core), achieving zero-copy, zero-system-call packet processing.

DPDK’s performance is exceptional. On a modern server with dual 100 Gbps NICs, a DPDK-based L3 forwarder can process 200+ million packets per second (enough to saturate both 100 Gbps links with minimum-sized packets). The per-packet processing budget is approximately 10 nanoseconds, which includes the NIC ring operations, the IP header checks, and the routing table lookup. Achieving this performance requires careful attention to every aspect of the system: cache line alignment (prevent false sharing between cores), huge pages (reduce TLB misses on DMA buffers), NUMA-aware memory allocation (keep DMA buffers local to the NIC’s NUMA node), and lock-free data structures (eliminate contention on shared state).

8. XDP and eBPF: Kernel Bypass Inside the Kernel

While DPDK and AF_XDP bypass the kernel entirely, XDP (eXpress Data Path) takes the opposite approach: it runs packet processing inside the kernel, but at the earliest possible point — in the NIC driver’s receive path, before the kernel allocates an sk_buff. XDP programs are eBPF programs attached to the XDP hook, and they can process packets at near-DPDK speeds while still benefiting from kernel integration (the kernel manages the NIC, handles link state, and provides the standard sysfs interface).

XDP programs can perform a range of actions: XDP_DROP (silently drop the packet), XDP_PASS (continue normal kernel processing), XDP_TX (bounce the packet back out the same interface), and XDP_REDIRECT (send to a different interface or to an AF_XDP socket). A simple XDP program that drops all packets to a blacklisted IP address can run at 100+ million packets per second on a single core, because it executes before the expensive sk_buff allocation and kernel stack processing.

XDP and AF_XDP are complementary: XDP handles early filtering and redirection at maximum speed, while AF_XDP provides the zero-copy user-space path for packets that need more complex processing (e.g., deep packet inspection, custom protocol handling). 9. The Future of Programmable Networking: P4, SmartNICs, and IPUs

The evolution of user-space networking is intersecting with the rise of programmable network hardware. P4 (Programming Protocol-independent Packet Processors) is a domain-specific language for programming network data planes. 10. Historic Context: The Birth of User-Space Networking

User-space networking has a longer history than many realize. In the 1990s, cluster computing projects (Beowulf, Myrinet) bypassed the kernel’s TCP/IP stack to achieve low-latency communication over specialized interconnects. The “OS bypass” concept was pioneered by these projects, which mapped network hardware directly into user-space processes. The Virtual Interface Architecture (VIA, 1997) standardized some of these ideas, and InfiniBand (2001) brought RDMA to mainstream datacenter networking.

When your per-packet budget is 10 nanoseconds, you cannot afford locks.

The rte_ring is a multi-producer, multi-consumer ring buffer that uses CAS (compare-and-swap) instructions for enqueue and dequeue operations. Multiple producers can enqueue without blocking each other; multiple consumers can dequeue without blocking each other. The ring is implemented as a circular buffer with head and tail pointers, and the enqueue/dequeue operations use a two-phase protocol: (1) atomically advance the head/tail pointer to reserve slots, (2) copy data into/out of the reserved slots. DPDK’s memory management is a significant departure from the kernel’s general-purpose allocator. DPDK uses huge pages (1 GB or 2 MB pages, instead of the default 4 KB) to reduce TLB misses on DMA buffers. A 1 GB huge page requires a single TLB entry, whereas the same memory using 4 KB pages requires 262,144 TLB entries — far more than the TLB capacity (typically 1,024-2,048 entries), causing frequent TLB misses. On a workload processing 100 million packets per second, each packet touching two buffers (one for the descriptor, one for the data), TLB misses on 4 KB pages would consume all available memory bandwidth.

DPDK’s rte_mempool library manages pools of fixed-size objects (typically rte_mbuf structures for packet buffers). The mempool is pre-allocated at initialization time and never freed — all allocations are constant-time (remove from the head of a free list). This eliminates the overhead of malloc/free (searching free lists, coalescing adjacent free blocks) and makes allocation latency predictable (no worst-case behavior). The trade-off is that memory cannot be returned to the system while the application is running — DPDK is designed for long-running, dedicated network functions, not for dynamic workloads.

NUMA awareness is built into DPDK’s memory allocator. The --socket-mem EAL parameter specifies how much memory to allocate on each NUMA socket. The mempool library provides per-socket caches: when a thread allocates an mbuf, it first checks its local socket’s cache (fast, no lock), then falls back to the shared pool (slower, requires atomic operations). This two-level allocation strategy keeps most allocations local to the processing core’s NUMA node, minimizing remote memory access latency.
