The Wasm stack is separate from the linear memory. The operand stack used for computation is not accessible via load/store instructions — it’s a private data structure inside the runtime. This prevents stack-based attacks (smashing the return address, injecting shellcode on the stack) that are common in native execution. The return address is stored on the runtime’s internal call stack, not in linear memory, and is validated on every return.

These security properties, combined with bounds checking, make Wasm arguably the most secure widely-deployed code execution environment. A Wasm module running in a browser or server-side runtime cannot escape its sandbox through memory corruption alone — it would need to exploit a bug in the Wasm runtime’s implementation of bounds checking, CFI, or signature validation. This is a much smaller attack surface than native code execution.

19. The Wasm Threading Proposal and Shared Memory

The Wasm threading proposal adds shared linear memory and atomic operations, enabling true multi-threaded Wasm applications. A Wasm module can be instantiated with “shared memory” — a WebAssembly.Memory object with the shared: true flag — that can be accessed concurrently by multiple agents (Web Workers in browsers, threads in standalone runtimes). The atomic instructions (i32.atomic.load, i32.atomic.store, i32.atomic.rmw.cmpxchg) guarantee that reads and writes to shared memory are atomic and sequentially consistent.

The Wasm threading model is “structured”: there is no fork or clone system call. Instead, the host creates a new agent (e.g., a Web Worker), which instantiates the same Wasm module with the same shared memory. The agents communicate through shared memory and atomics, and coordinate through memory.atomic.wait and memory.atomic.notify (futex-like blocking). This model is simpler and more portable than POSIX threads (no signal handling, no thread-local storage, no priority inheritance), but it’s sufficient for parallel algorithms, producer-consumer queues, and data-d21abca computations.

The Wasm threads proposal also enables a critical performance optimization: the ability to use multiple CPU cores for Wasm execution. Single-threaded Wasm is limited to one core’s performance; multi-threaded Wasm can scale across all available cores, making Wasm viable for compute-intensive workloads like image processing, scientific computing, and machine learning inference.

The future of Wasm is not just faster execution — it is becoming the universal runtime for portable, secure code. Whether running in a browser sandbox, a blockchain validator, an edge compute node, or a serverless platform, Wasm provides the same execution model with the same security guarantees.
