- Thrift (standard) is great for low‑latency, low‑concurrency environments. In high latency, it’s only suitable if you have a fixed, small number of connections (e.g., one per server) and can live with limited throughput.
- ZeroMQ REQ/REP suffers the same limitation.
- ZeroMQ DEALER/ROUTER offers the best throughput and lowest overhead in high latency, but requires manual serialization and multiplexing logic.
- gRPC is a solid choice for high‑latency environments, provided you tune its flow control and understand that tail latency can suffer under packet loss. Its ecosystem (load balancing, tracing, streaming) makes it attractive for large‑scale systems.
- Connection setup time (especially with TLS) can dominate first‑request latency; use long‑lived connections in high latency.
When building for a globally distributed world, do not trust benchmarks that skip the network. Simulate your actual latency profile and test with your actual payload sizes. The 10 times difference we observed between gRPC and Thrift at 200 ms RTT could be the difference between a system that meets SLAs and one that fails.
