9. Practical Considerations and Pitfalls

Hash Function Selection: You need fast, independent, and uniformly distributed hashes. MurmurHash3, xxHash, CityHash are popular. Avoid cryptographic hashes (SHA-256) if you need speed, but for dedup you might already hash the content. You can reuse that hash as input to the bloom filter – but ensure independence across k functions via double hashing.

If you keep the same number of virtual nodes and just add a physical server, the ownership distribution changes. You need to migrate filter state from old owner to new owner. This can be done by streaming the bits/counters over the network – but that’s heavy. Better to not move state; instead, each shard’s filter is local and the new shard starts empty. This means that some items may appear in both old and new shards after rebalancing until the old filter is discarded. That’s acceptable if you use a TTL.

False Negative Window: During shard rebalancing, if a new shard takes over a key range that previously belonged to another shard, the new shard’s filter doesn’t have the old data. This can cause false negatives for previously inserted items. To avoid, you can query both the old and new shards (using consistent hashing with “look behind” techniques).

Counter Overflow: If you expect high multiplicities (>15), increase counter width. Or use a two-layer approach: up to 15 in main filter, beyond that move to an overflow hash map.

They teach us an important lesson: sometimes, accepting a small probability of error is the only way to achieve the performance, scale, and cost-efficiency that our global systems demand.

So the next time your cache tells you “Yes, I’ve seen that before,” remember it might be lying. But with a well-designed probabilistic filter, you can afford to let it lie – as long as the lie is bounded, measurable, and acceptable.
