Complexity: Construction of NFA O(M expected) + O(M _ sigma) for filling full table (sigma = 256 constant). That makes construction O(M) in terms of M but with a factor of 256, which is still O(M) because 256 is constant. Memory: O(M _ sigma) which can be large (e.g., 1M states -> 256M ints ~1GB). For production, they often compress using run-length encoding or use a state machine with two arrays (delta0 and delta1 for AC automaton variants).

Search: O(N) – no failure loops. Each character: one array lookup, zero branches (except the loop over output list). Much faster in practice.

For 10 million patterns, total pattern length M could be 500 million characters = states? Actually number of states is at most M (assuming unique prefixes). 500 million states would require 500M * 256 = 128 billion integers – impossible. Therefore, real antivirus uses a trie with failure links (NFA-style) but optimized with array of next states for the alphabet only for the most frequent states? Or they use bit-parallel techniques like Wu-Manber, which is a different algorithm. Actually many modern signature-based systems (like ClamAV) use a variant called AC_DFA but with state compression: they store transitions using a sparse delta array (like adjacency list) and use a two-level lookup. They also limit the number of states by preprocessing patterns into smaller sets (e.g., grouping by length). The “lost art” here is that the textbook algorithm is not directly used; engineers make trade-offs.

  • Network Intrusion Detection Systems (Snort, Suricata): They need to scan packets in real time against thousands of rules. They often use Aho-Corasick with byte alphabet, and they precompute a DFA for performance. Memory is less of an issue because the pattern set is smaller (e.g., 10k rules). But they must handle overlapping patterns and fast updates (hot swap of rule sets). The DFA version is harder to update incrementally; the NFA version is easier to add new patterns (just insert into trie and recalc failure links from the insertion point, but existing nodes’ failure links may need updating). That is another angle of the lost art: static vs dynamic pattern sets.

  • Bioinformatics (DNA/Protein): The alphabet is small (4 or 20). DFA construction is cheap. Aho-Corasick is used to search for many sequence motifs. For very long genomes (billions of bases), memory is still a concern but the state count is limited (total length of motifs). The DFA variant with full table works well, often implemented in C++ with memory pools.

  • Text processing (like grep): Tools like grep -F (fixed-string) use a single-pattern Boyer-Moore; but for multiple fixed strings, some implementations use Aho-Corasick. The ripgrep tool (rg) uses a variant called aho-corasick crate in Rust, which implements both sparse and dense transitions based on alphabet size. For ASCII they use dense arrays; for Unicode they use sparse hash maps. That is a perfect example of the lost art being rediscovered: you must choose representation based on alphabet.

8.1 Handling Large Alphabets (Unicode)

If you need to match patterns containing arbitrary Unicode characters (or multi-byte UTF-8), the alphabet becomes huge (over 1 million code points). Storing a dense transition table per state is impossible. Two strategies:

  • Sparse automaton (NFA) with hash maps per state. Construction O(M) expected, but each lookup during search requires a hash calculation – still O(1) expected, but with overhead. The failure-link construction also uses dictionary lookups, but the inner while loop may cause many lookups if the hash maps are large. However, it works.

  • Use byte-level automaton on UTF-8 encoded text. Treat each byte as a symbol (alphabet 256). Patterns are encoded as UTF-8 byte sequences. The automaton will match the raw bytes, which might produce false positives if patterns can cross character boundaries? Actually a properly encoded UTF-8 string ensures that the bytes of a multi-byte character are never part of another character’s lead byte. Aho-Corasick on byte level works safely for exact byte sequences. But if your patterns are specified as Unicode strings, you must encode them to UTF-8 first. The automaton then matches the encoded forms. This is a common approach.

8.2 Merging Outputs Efficiently

In the NFA approach, we merged output lists during BFS by extending the list with the failure node’s output. This can lead to duplicate pattern indices if a pattern appears both at the node and as a suffix via multiple failure steps. Our simple extend adds duplicates. For correctness we need a set, but that adds overhead. In practice, we can store a list of pattern indices at each node only for patterns that end exactly at that node, and during search we traverse the failure chain to collect all outputs (like a linked list of output nodes). That avoids duplication but requires extra pointer chasing during search. Many implementations use a pointer to the next output node (often called output link or dict link). For example, each node can have an integer out that points to the next node in the output chain; the end of chain is -1. During construction, when we set fail[u] = v, we also set output[u] = (pattern id) and then link to output[v] if any. Then during search, for a state s, we traverse its output chain (including its own pattern) until -1. This avoids lists and copying.

8.3 Online (Incremental) Construction

What if the pattern set grows over time? For an antivirus, signatures are updated regularly. The DFA version is hard to update – you would need to recompute all transitions for new states and possibly update existing failure links. The NFA version can be updated incrementally: inserting a new pattern into the trie adds new states (no changes to existing trie nodes). Then you must compute failure links for the new nodes, which may require updating failure links of some existing nodes if the new pattern creates a better suffix match for them? Actually no: failure links are based on the longest suffix of the node’s string that exists in the trie. If you add a new node at depth d, it might become the failure link for a node at depth d+1 that was previously pointing to a shorter suffix. But those nodes (depth d+1) do not exist yet because you haven’t added them. However, if you add a pattern that creates a node that is a better suffix for some existing node’s children that don’t exist? This is complex. The standard incremental update algorithm (called “dynamic Aho-Corasick”) is non-trivial; usually, when new signatures are added, the entire automaton is rebuilt from scratch (which is O(M) anyway) – since M is huge but rebuild time can be acceptable if done offline and swapped atomically. That is what real antivirus does: they rebuild the signature database periodically.


Section 9: Comparisons with Other Multi-Pattern Algorithms

Aho-Corasick is not the only game in town. Here’s a quick comparison:

  • Wu-Manber: A multi-pattern algorithm based on hashing and block shifts. It works well for long patterns and larger alphabets, especially in intrusion detection. It can be faster than Aho-Corasick in practice for certain pattern sets because it skips characters. However, it does not guarantee linear worst-case time.

  • Rabin-Karp with Rolling Hash: Can be extended to multi-pattern by storing pattern hashes in a hash set. Average-case O(N), but worst-case O(N * k) if many false positives. Not suitable for adversarial inputs.

  • Set of Boyer-Moore automata: Not practical for many patterns.

  • Bit-parallel algorithms (Shift-Or, BNDM): For short patterns and small alphabets.

  • Commentz-Walter: A multi-pattern extension of Boyer-Moore; it uses a trie of reversed patterns and heuristic shifts. Not linear.

For exact multi-pattern matching with no false positives and guaranteed linear time, Aho-Corasick remains the gold standard. The DFA variant provides the fastest search at the cost of memory; the NFA variant provides space efficiency at the cost of some speed (due to failure loops). The lost art is knowing which to use.


Section 10: The Legacy of Aho-Corasick – More Than String Matching

The idea of a finite automaton with failure links (suffix links) was later generalized to construct suffix automata (SAM) for a single string, and suffix trees via Ukkonen’s algorithm. The Aho-Corasick automaton is essentially a digital version of a trie automaton that forms the basis of regular expression engines when compiled into an NFA with epsilon transitions (Thompson construction) and then determinized. Indeed, the Aho-Corasick construction is a special case of building a deterministic automaton from a set of strings (without alphabet closure). It is also used in spam filtering (since email content can be scanned for known spam phrases) and DNA sequence alignment (where you search for known genetic markers).

The algorithm has been adapted to 2D pattern matching (grid patterns) and compressed text matching (on LZ77 compressed data) with clever modifications.
