When the pattern is not periodic and the alphabet is large, the average-case complexity is around O(n/m) – sublinear! That is, the algorithm often examines only a fraction of the text characters.

The best case occurs when the rightmost character of the pattern never matches the text, leading to shifts of m each time, i.e., O(n/m) comparisons.

7.3 Worst-Case and Galil’s Rule

The worst-case O(n*m) can be avoided by adding a simple modification known as Galil’s Rule. The insight is that when we have matched part of the pattern and then a mismatch, we know that the pattern has a period that can be exploited to avoid rechecking already matched characters.
