If the last process is faulty, then different recipients might get different values. So leaf values may not be consistent.

The induction step uses majority to handle this. It’s classic: the number of faulty children is at most f, and the number of honest children is at least n - f - 1. Since n > 3f, we have n - f - 1 > 2f? Actually we need to ensure that the honest processes outnumber the faulty ones among the children. The critical condition is that for any node, the set of children paths that contain at most one more faulty process (the new one in the child) will have a majority of honest ones. This works when n > 3f.

Thus, with careful induction, we get that the root decides a common value. Validity: if all honest processes have the same initial value v, then the commander (if honest) sends v, and all honest lieutenants receive v, and the recursive majority will preserve v.

7.2 A Simple Example with n=4, f=1

Let’s simulate EIG for n=4 (generals 0,1,2,3), f=1. Assume general 0 is commander. Suppose general 3 is faulty. Initial values: honest generals have v=0, faulty general may have anything.

Round 1: Commander (0) sends value 0 to all. Lieutenants 1,2,3 each get 0 (though 3 may claim something else later? But he receives from commander; he could lie about what he received, but the value in node [0] for each lieutenant is what they actually received from commander. So for honest 1 and 2, v_1([0])=0, v_2([0])=0. For faulty 3, he might also have received 0, but he could pretend he received something else when sending later. However, the stored value for [0] in his tree is the actual received value; he can’t change it for himself? Actually, the algorithm assumes that processes store the values they receive. A faulty process can store any value it wants, but that doesn’t affect honest processes’ trees. The honest processes only care about messages they receive. So in round 1, each honest lieutenant receives value 0 from commander and stores it.

Round 2 (last round for f=1): Each lieutenant i (except commander) sends to all other lieutenants the value they stored for node [0]. So lieutenant 1 sends 0 to lieutenants 2 and 3. Lieutenant 2 sends 0 to lieutenants 1 and 3. Lieutenant 3 (faulty) can send any arbitrary value to lieutenants 1 and 2. For example, he sends 0 to 1 and 1 to 2.

Now, each honest lieutenant builds its EIG tree:

  • Lieutenant 1’s tree:
    • Root
    • [0] = 0 (from commander in round 1)
    • Children of [0]:
      • [0,1] ? Process 1 doesn’t send to itself, so no.
      • [0,2] = 0 (from lieutenant 2’s message in round 2)
      • [0,3] = value from lieutenant 3. Since 3 sent 0 to 1, v_1([0,3]) = 0.
  • Lieutenant 2’s tree:
    • Root, [0]=0
    • [0,1] = 0 (from lieutenant 1)
    • [0,2] = not set (self)
    • [0,3] = 1 (from foolish/lying 3)
  • Lieutenant 3’s tree (faulty): irrelevant.

Now decision: For lieutenant 1, compute decide([0,2]) = v([0,2]) = 0, decide([0,3]) = 0. Decide([0]) = majority of {decide([0,2]), decide([0,3])} = majority(0,0)=0. Then decide(root) = decide([0]) = 0. So he decides 0.

For lieutenant 2, decide([0,1]) = 0, decide([0,3]) = 1. Majority of {0,1}? There is a tie (2 children, one 0 and one 1). The default value (say, retreat) is used. If default is 0, then decide([0])=0, and decides 0. If default is 1, then he decides 1. This is a problem: the algorithm must have a deterministic default that everyone agrees on, say 0. So with default 0, both decide 0. Indeed, in the classic protocol, the default value for a tie is pre-agreed (e.g., “retreat” = 0). Then agreement holds: both honest decide 0.

What if the faulty general wanted to cause disagreement? He sent 0 to 1 and 1 to 2. This creates a tie for the second lieutenant. But because we have only 2 honest children? Actually, for node [0], the children are [0,1], [0,2], [0,3]. But [0,2] is not considered because you don’t include self? In our tree, we only have children for other processes. For lieutenant 2, node [0] has two children: [0,1] and [0,3] (since self-excluded). So only two children, tie possible. But note: we omitted [0,2] because self. However, the algorithm typically includes only distinct IDs. The number of children for a node of length 1 is (n-2) because there are n-1 other generals minus the commander? Wait, for node [0], the set of possible next IDs is all generals except 0 and the current process? Actually, in the standard construction, the tree includes only paths that do not repeat IDs and do not include the current process’s ID at any point? It’s messy. The classic EIG algorithm includes paths up to length f+1 where the sequence has distinct IDs and each ID appears at most once. For a given process i, when building its tree, it will have nodes for all sequences of distinct IDs that do not include i (because i never needs to send to itself). So the number of children for node [0] is (n-2) (all processes except 0 and the current process). So for lieutenant 1, children of [0] are [0,2] and [0,3]. That’s 2 children. For lieutenant 2, children are [0,1] and [0,3]. That’s also 2. For n=4, the number of children is n-2=2, which is indeed only 2. With 2 children, a tie is possible. But the algorithm requires that the majority vote works when the tree is deeper? Actually, the proof of correctness assumes n > 3f. For f=1, n >= 4. The critical condition is that for any node, among its children, the number of honest ones is strictly greater than half of the total children, but that is not true when n=4 and f=1? Let’s examine: For node [0], honest children are those where the child’s last ID is honest. There are (n-2)=2 children. Number of faulty processes among those children is at most f - maybe faulty general 3 appears as a child. Since there is one faulty general, one child may be faulty. So we have 1 honest child and 1 faulty child? Actually, among the set of children (IDs), there are n-2 = 2. One of them is the faulty general (3), the other is the other honest general (2 for lieutenant 1, or 1 for lieutenant 2). So one honest, one faulty. That’s equal. Then majority is not guaranteed to be > half; we have a tie. So why does the algorithm still work for n=4? Because the recipe uses majority after the recursion resorts to a default rule for ties. The standard proof requires n > 3f to ensure that at deeper levels, there are enough honest children to outvote faulty ones. But at the top level, with f=1 and n=4, we have n = 3f+1, which is the minimal requirement. At the root’s children (level 1), we have only one node ([0]), not a set of children. The root itself has only one child (the commander’s node). So the decision is trivial. The tie only appears at level 1’s children. The algorithm recursively computes values for each child, and for the root, it simply takes the value of its single child. That avoids the tie? Wait, the root’s only child is the node [0], and decide([0]) is computed as majority of its children. So if that majority is a tie, the default rule breaks the tie. The protocol works because there is always a way to break ties consistently (everyone uses the same default). However, validity may be weakened: if the commander is honest, the default might override if there is a tie. But if the commander is honest and sends 0, then both honest lieutenants receive 0 from commander, and the faulty lieutenant’s children will not cause a tie if the faulty lieutenant sends conflicting values to different honest lieutenants? Let’s see: In the example above, commander is honest, sends 0. Lieutenant 1 has children [0,2]=0 and [0,3]=0 (since faulty 3 sent 0 to him). So majority is 0 (unanimous). Lieutenant 2 has children [0,1]=0 and [0,3]=1, so tie, default 0 gives 0. So both decide 0. Valid. If the commander were faulty, validity does not require anything specific. So it’s fine. For f=2 and n=7, the tree depth is 3, and at each level there are enough honest children to guarantee a majority without default, ensuring the commander’s value (if honest) propagates. So the algorithm is correct.

Thus, the EIG algorithm achieves agreement even at the minimal resilience threshold n > 3f, but with exponential cost.

It is a lens through which we can understand the fundamental trade-offs in distributed systems: the cost of trust without authentication, the power of signatures, the unpredictability of randomness, and the beauty of recursive algorithms.

And with ingenuity, we can design protocols that work at scale, powering the decentralized systems of today and tomorrow.

The next time you send a transaction on a blockchain, or rely on a distributed ledger, remember the exponential ghost that lurks beneath the surface. The chaos of consensus has been tamed, but it never truly goes away.
