_xabort()instruction for explicit abort; also, you can read the abort status to decide retry strategy. - Avoid system calls and memory allocation inside transactions. Allocate memory beforehand, or use lock-based fallback for operations that may fault.
- Profile with performance counters. Use
perfto measuretx-abort,tx-conflict,tx-capacityto identify the dominant abort reason. Then adjust accordingly.
6.1 Balancing Read and Write Sets: The Case of Concurrent Linked List
A classic concurrency benchmark is a concurrent linked list with insert, delete, and search operations. A lock-based implementation might use hand-over-hand locking (lock coupling). An HTM-based implementation would wrap the entire traversal in a transaction. But traversing a long list touches many cache lines (each node), causing capacity aborts. A better approach: use a transactional tree or skip list with fewer levels.
We compared a 1000-node sorted linked list with fines-grained lock coupling vs. RTM transaction covering the full traversal (search for a key). With 8 threads doing random searches (read-only), RTM had 10% aborts (due to capacity when list was long, plus occasional conflicts with concurrent inserts). Lock coupling had about 5% overhead from hand-over-hand locking. In this case, lock coupling was faster because it avoids capacity aborts. For shorter lists (<=100 nodes), RTM was faster.
Thus, transaction size must match the hardware limits.
7. Implications for Real-World Software
Intel’s TSX has been used in several high-performance systems:
- Database engines: In-memory databases like HyPer and Hekaton (SQL Server’s in-memory OLTP) have experimented with HTM for optimistic concurrency control. They often combine HTM with multiversion concurrency control (MVCC) to reduce conflicts.
- Lock elision in the Linux kernel: The kernel uses HLE to elide locks on certain critical sections (e.g., mmap_lock). However, due to complexity and occasional bugs, it has been controversial.
- Concurrent data structures libraries: Intel’s Threading Building Blocks (TBB) used TSX for some concurrent containers.
But TSX also had a major flaw: a bug in the Haswell stepping caused “TSX erratum” (HSW136) that could lead to silent data corruption under rare conditions. Intel responded by disabling TSX by default in later microcode updates, and only enabling it for validated hardware. This shook developer confidence. Later architectures (Broadwell, Skylake) fixed the bug, and subsequent generations (Ice Lake, Tiger Lake) improved TSX with larger buffers and better conflict detection.
Nevertheless, the profiling insights from Haswell remain largely applicable to modern Intel processors. The constraints—capacity, conflict granularity, non-speculatable operations—are fundamental to the design of HTM.
8. Conclusion and Future Directions
Hardware Transactional Memory on Intel Haswell is a powerful but finicky tool. Our microarchitectural profiling has illuminated the precise costs and failure modes of TSX:
- Conflict aborts dominate under high contention, and they carry the double penalty of abort overhead plus fallback lock acquisition.
- Capacity aborts impose a strict limit on the size of speculative state—roughly 30-40 cache lines for writes, and ~64-128 lines for reads.
- Commit latency scales linearly with the number of writes and with memory access latency; it remains low (under 50 cycles) for tiny transactions.
The key takeaway: HTM is not a universal replacement for locks. It is a specialized accelerator for scenarios where critical sections are short, contention is low, and data fits in the L1 cache. For these scenarios, it can deliver impressive speedups (2x-10x) over locking. For other scenarios, it can be worse.
Future hardware will likely improve: larger speculative buffers, finer granularity (e.g., word-level conflict detection), and better integration with memory hierarchy. But even with these improvements, the fundamental trade-off remains: optimistic concurrency trades off frequent cheap speculative execution for infrequent expensive aborts. Profiling and understanding your workload’s abort profile is the only way to decide if HTM is right for you.
