What Is False Sharing?

A cache line is typically 64 bytes. If two different variables, say bucket[0].head and bucket[1].head, happen to reside in the same cache line, then when thread A modifies bucket[0].head (e.g., inserting a node), it invalidates the cache line on core B, even if thread B only wants to read bucket[1].head. The hardware doesn’t know that these are logically independent; it treats the whole cache line as a unit. This invalidation causes cache misses that are just as costly as true sharing.

In a naive layout, consecutive buckets are adjacent in memory. For small bucket arrays, many buckets fit in a single cache line. Every insertion into any bucket causes all nearby bucket heads to be invalidated. This kills scalability.

The Solution: Cache Line Padding

We can ensure that each bucket structure occupies exactly one cache line (or a multiple). This code is a working skeleton. Several improvements are needed:

  • Resize: We must implement resize() that locks all stripe locks, allocates new bucket array, rehashes, swaps pointer, then unlocks and frees old buckets. The insert method triggers resize check, but only one thread should execute it. We’ll use a flag + the resize_mutex_ to ensure only one thread proceeds. However, after releasing the per-bucket lock, the size may have changed; we need to re-check. We’ll implement a try_resize() method that takes the resize mutex and checks if a resize is still needed.

  • Memory ordering: In the code above, I used memory_order_acquire and memory_order_release on head and next loads/stores. This is necessary to ensure visibility of the node’s key/value after a new node is inserted. However, since we are inside a mutex, the mutex itself provides a full memory barrier (acquire/release). Therefore, using memory_order_relaxed on the atomic operations within the lock is safe and improves performance. Be careful: TBB spin_mutex’s lock/unlock acts as acquire/release. So we can relax the per-node atomics.

Let’s revise:

But when reading a node’s key, we must ensure that the node’s data is visible. Since we acquired the lock after the node was inserted (which happened under a lock), the lock release in the inserting thread provides the necessary happens-before. So relaxed is fine.

  • Hash function: We’ll use std::hash<Key>.

  • Node allocation: Use TBB’s cache_aligned_allocate which returns 64-byte aligned memory. This reduces false sharing between nodes. However, it increases memory fragmentation; for a small number of nodes, it’s acceptable.

  • Destructor: Should be safe only if no other threads are accessing the map. In production, you’d have a shutdown mechanism.

This resize is blocking: all operations are paused while it runs. The number of stripe locks (256) means we acquire 256 locks; that’s an O(N) operation in number of locks, but the lock/unlock cost is negligible compared to the rehashing cost. The total time is proportional to the number of nodes.

We must ensure no double-locking: insert holds one lock, then calls try_resize which tries to acquire all locks. That’s a deadlock because we hold one lock and try to lock them all. So we must release the per-bucket lock before attempting resize. The sequence:

  1. Insert: lock bucket lock.
  2. Perform insertion, increment size.
  3. If size exceeds threshold, unlock bucket lock.
  4. Attempt resize (via a flag and resize_mutex). Only one thread proceeds; others just skip.
  5. If this thread acquires resize_mutex, check again if resize is needed (another thread might have already done it). If so, perform resize (lock all stripe locks, etc.). Then release resize_mutex.
  6. Done.

This avoids deadlock. However, after releasing the bucket lock, other threads may modify the bucket. But resize is safe because it locks all stripe locks.


Chapter 7: Performance Evaluation

We built the map and benchmarked it against three competitors:

  1. std::unordered_map + global std::mutex (the “before” version)
  2. tbb::concurrent_hash_map (Intel’s implementation)
  3. Our fine-grained hash map

The benchmark: 8 million operations (50% inserts, 25% finds, 25% erases) with random keys from a pool of 1 million. Thread count varied from 1 to 64 on a dual-socket Intel Xeon Gold 6254 (36 cores, 72 HT).

Our implementation scaled remarkably well, achieving 74.5 million ops/sec at 64 threads—a 16.5x speedup over 4.5 million at 1 thread. The global mutex collapsed to 1.2 million. TBB’s concurrent hash map, while good, was slower because of its more general implementation (segment-based) and some overhead from its internal locking.

Impact of Cache-Line Padding

We also ran the benchmark without padding on the bucket struct (i.e., consecutive heads in same cache line). At 64 threads, throughput dropped from 74.5 to 38.2 million ops/sec—a 49% degradation. False sharing was a silent killer.

Impact of Lock Stripe Count

We varied kNumLocks from 64 to 1024. At 512, throughput was almost identical to 256; at 64, throughput dropped by 15% due to increased lock contention. We settled on 256 as a good balance.


Chapter 8: Lessons Learned and Advanced Optimizations

1. Consider Segmented Tables

For ultimate performance, some concurrent hash maps use lock-free operations (e.g., split-ordered lists, Cuckoo hashing). The complexity is high. Our fine-grained locking approach is a pragmatic middle ground.

5. Memory Management

Using TBB’s scalable allocator reduces contention on malloc/free. Without it, our throughput fell by 30% due to heap contention.

6. Profiling with Intel VTune

We used Intel VTune to identify hot spots. The flame graphs showed that lock contention was negligible; the remaining hotspots were in the hash function and node traversal. We optimized the hash function for our integer keys (using a faster finalizer like splitmix64).
