Beyond the Single File: Multi-File Torrents

The info dictionary can also describe a directory structure with multiple files. These messages communicate whether you have pieces that the other peer wants. If peer A has piece 5 and peer B doesn’t, peer B should send an “interested” message to A. If peer A is unchoking B, B can then request pieces.

The distinction between “interested” and “requesting” is important. A peer might be interested (meaning it wants some of your pieces) but choked (meaning you’re not accepting its requests). The peer should still express interest because when you re-evaluate your unchoke list, you’ll consider interested peers.

Have (ID 4)

When a peer completes downloading a piece and verifies its hash, it should broadcast a “have” message to all connected peers. The message contains the piece index (4 bytes, big-endian). This allows peers to update their knowledge of what’s available in the swarm.

However, broadcasting “have” messages for every single piece can generate significant overhead in large swarms. A common optimization is to batch “have” messages or to use a “bitfield” message instead.

Bitfield (ID 5)

The bitfield message is sent immediately after the handshake (if the peer has any pieces). It contains a bitfield where each bit represents a piece: 1 means the peer has that piece, 0 means it doesn’t. The bitfield is padded with zeros to align to a byte boundary.

For example, if there are 17 pieces, the bitfield would be 3 bytes long (24 bits), with the last 7 bits being padding. The first bit of the first byte corresponds to piece 0, the second bit to piece 1, etc.

The rarest first strategy has a beautiful emergent property: pieces that are rare become popular (everyone wants to download them), which increases their availability, which makes them less rare. This creates a natural balancing mechanism in the swarm.

Random First Piece

When you first join a swarm, you have zero pieces. The rarest first strategy would have you download from peers who have the rarest pieces, but you’re not going to upload anything for a while anyway. It’s more important to get your first complete piece quickly so you can start contributing.

The random first piece strategy is simple: for your first piece (or first few pieces), just pick a random piece that any peer has and download it. Don’t worry about rarity. The goal is to become a seed for at least one piece as fast as possible.

Strict Priority

Within a piece, blocks should be requested in order. This sounds obvious, but it has an important consequence: if you finish downloading a piece, you can verify and share it. If you download blocks in random order, you might have blocks from many different pieces but none complete.

Strict priority means: pick a piece, download all its blocks (in order), then move to the next piece. This maximizes the rate at which you produce complete, verifiable pieces that can be shared with the swarm.

Endgame Mode

As you approach the end of a download (when fewer than 20 pieces remain), a problem arises: the last few pieces can take a disproportionately long time because few peers have them. To combat this, BitTorrent enters “endgame mode.”

In endgame mode, you send requests for the same block to multiple peers simultaneously. When you receive the block from one peer, you cancel the outstanding requests. This creates some redundant network traffic but dramatically reduces the time to complete the download.

The key challenge in endgame mode is handling the cancellation efficiently. If you cancel too late, the peer might have already sent the block. If you cancel too early, you might miss a block that never arrives. The standard approach is to keep a timer: if you don’t receive a requested block within a certain timeout, re-request it from another peer.

Super-Seeding

Super-seeding is an optimization for initial seeds—the first seed in a swarm who has the complete file. In normal operation, a seed would announce all its pieces and upload to whoever requested them. In super-seeding mode, the seed only announces pieces that have already been uploaded to other peers. This prevents a new peer from downloading many pieces from the seed without uploading any, accelerating the initial distribution of pieces.

The seed essentially “lies” about which pieces it has, only revealing new pieces after previous ones have been distributed. This trick encourages faster replication of pieces throughout the swarm.


Handling Malicious Peers

In any P2P system, you have to assume that some peers are malicious. They might send corrupted data, try to waste your bandwidth, or attempt to attack the swarm. BitTorrent has several defenses.

Hash Verification

Every piece is verified against its SHA1 hash before being accepted. If a peer sends a block that, when combined with other blocks, fails the hash check, the entire piece is discarded and re-downloaded. Persistent failures from a specific peer can cause that peer to be banned.

Peer ID Blacklisting

If you detect suspicious behavior from a peer (e.g., sending corrupted pieces repeatedly, sending malformed messages, violating protocol), you can blacklist their peer ID. Since peer IDs can be faked, this isn’t foolproof, but it’s a useful first defense.

Bitfield Validation

When receiving a bitfield, you should validate that it’s consistent with the torrent’s piece count. A bitfield that claims more pieces than exist is invalid. Similarly, a peer that claims to have all pieces but then sends corrupted data is suspicious.

The Fast Extension

The Fast extension (indicated by a reserved bit) adds several features for handling malicious peers:

  • Have All/Have None: Instead of sending a full bitfield for a seed, the peer can send a “have all” message. For a leecher with no pieces, a “have none” message.
  • Reject Request: If a peer receives a request it can’t fulfill (bad index, bad offset, etc.), it can send a reject message instead of just ignoring the request. This allows the requesting peer to detect misconfigured or malicious peers.
  • Allowed Fast: A set of pieces that a peer will serve immediately, even if the requesting peer is choked. This helps new peers bootstrap faster, even when they haven’t yet proven themselves as uploaders.

Rate Limiting

You should rate-limit connections from individual peers. If a peer tries to send data faster than you can process it, or sends many more messages than expected, you can cap their bandwidth or disconnect them.


Optimizing Network Performance

Now let’s talk about making everything fast. A naive implementation might work correctly but crawl at 1MB/s. A well-optimized client should saturate a gigabit connection (125MB/s theoretical max). Here’s how.

Scatter-Gather I/O with sendfile()

When writing received blocks to disk, avoid copying data unnecessarily. Use scatter-gather I/O (via OS system calls like writev on Linux or writefile with scatter support on Windows) to write data directly from the receive buffer to the file at the correct offset.

For reading pieces to upload, use sendfile() to send data directly from the file to the socket without copying through userspace. This can provide a significant performance boost, especially for large files.

Connection Pooling

Managing dozens or hundreds of TCP connections efficiently requires an event-driven approach. Use epoll (Linux), kqueue (BSD/macOS), or IOCP (Windows) to multiplex connections without creating a thread per connection. Asynchronous I/O is essential for handling the I/O-bound nature of BitTorrent.

TCP Tuning

Several TCP socket options can improve performance:

  • TCP_NODELAY: Disable Nagle’s algorithm, which can introduce latency by buffering small writes. Since BitTorrent already buffers messages properly, we don’t need Nagle’s help.
  • TCP_QUICKACK (Linux): Send ACKs immediately rather than delaying them. This can improve latency for the control messages.
  • SO_RCVBUF/SO_SNDBUF: Increase the socket buffer sizes to handle high-latency connections. The default might be too small for 100+ ms latencies at high speeds.
  • SO_KEEPALIVE: Enable TCP keepalive to detect dead connections faster. Configure the keepalive interval to be aggressive (e.g., 30 seconds) to quickly prune dead peers.

Buffering and Write Coalescing

Writing many small packets to a socket is inefficient due to TCP overhead. Instead, buffer outgoing messages and flush them in larger batches. A message buffer can coalesce multiple small messages into a single TCP segment:

Piece Validation Pipeline

Validating pieces (calculating SHA1 hashes) is CPU-intensive. For large files, this can become a bottleneck. Several strategies help:

  1. Use multiple validation threads: Offload hash computation to a thread pool. The main event loop can continue handling network I/O while background threads verify pieces.

  2. Use hardware acceleration: Many modern CPUs have SHA1 instructions (via Intel SHA Extensions or ARM Crypto Extensions). Use them if available.

  3. Validate in fixed-sized buffers: When you receive a block, copy it into a pre-allocated buffer. Once the buffer is full (all blocks for a piece received), submit it for validation.

  4. Deferred validation: In some implementations, you can accept blocks without immediately verifying them, allowing the swarm to continue flowing. This is risky—you might end up sharing corrupted data—but it can improve performance if you’re confident in your peer selection.


Advanced Topics: DHT, PEX, and Magnet Links

The basic BitTorrent protocol relies on trackers for peer discovery. But what if the tracker goes down? Or what if you don’t have a torrent file, just an info hash? This is where distributed hash tables (DHT) and peer exchange (PEX) come in.

The Mainline DHT

The Mainline DHT (based on Kademlia) allows peers to find each other without a central tracker. Each peer maintains a routing table of other peers and can query them for peers associated with a specific info hash. The DHT effectively implements a distributed database mapping info hashes to peer addresses.

The DHT protocol uses UDP messages (much faster than TCP for this purpose) and defines four message types:

  • Ping: Check if a peer is alive
  • Find Node: Find the closest peers to a given node ID
  • Find Value: Find peers associated with a given info hash
  • Store Value: Announce yourself as a source for a given info hash

The DHT is a topic worthy of its own series of blog posts, but the key insight is this: every peer becomes a mini-tracker for the swarms it participates in. The network is self-organizing and resilient.

Peer Exchange (PEX)

PEX allows peers to exchange peer lists directly, without involving a tracker at all. When you’re connected to peer A, you can ask peer A for the other peers it’s connected to. This creates a gossip network where peer information spreads through the swarm.

PEX messages are typically sent over the extended protocol (more on this in a moment) and include:

  • added: A compact list of (IP, port) pairs of peers that have been added since the last exchange
  • added.f: Flags for the added peers (e.g., supports encryption)
  • dropped: A compact list of peers that have been removed

PEX is extremely effective in large swarms, where tracker announcements might be infrequent (every 30 minutes or so). Combined with DHT, it makes BitTorrent nearly tracker-independent.

Magnet Links

Magnet links are the logical conclusion of the DHT/PEX evolution. A magnet link contains only the info hash (and optionally a tracker URL), nothing else. Your client uses the info hash to look up peers via DHT, connects to them, and then downloads the torrent metadata itself using the Metadata Exchange extension.

This means you don’t need a torrent file at all. You just need the 40-hex-character info hash. This is how many modern BitTorrent users share content—by posting magnet links on forums or social media.

The Extended Protocol

The extended protocol (indicated by a reserved bit in the handshake) provides a framework for exchanging arbitrary messages between peers. After the initial handshake, peers exchange “extended handshake” messages that list the extensions they support. Common extensions include:

  • Metadata Exchange (ut_metadata): Download the torrent metadata from the swarm
  • Peer Exchange (ut_pex): Exchange peer lists
  • Upload Only (ut_upload_only): Indicate that a peer is a seed and won’t be downloading
  • Mercury (lt_mercury): A pub/sub system for distributing arbitrary data
  • DHT Announce (ut_dht): Announce DHT node information

The extended protocol uses LTEP (LimeWire Transport Extension Protocol) style messages: a 1-byte message ID (always 20 for the extended protocol), followed by the extension message itself.


Putting It All Together: A Client Architecture

Now let me walk you through the architecture of the client I’m building. It’s not the only way to structure a BitTorrent client, but it’s a clean, modular approach that handles the complexity well.

Data Flow

  1. Bootstrap: Load the torrent file, parse the info dictionary, extract the info hash, piece hashes, and tracker URL.

  2. Tracker Announce: Send an HTTP GET to the tracker with our info hash and peer info. Receive a list of peers.

  3. Peer Connection: For each peer, attempt a TCP connection. On success, send the BitTorrent handshake, receive the peer’s handshake, then exchange bitfields.

  4. Piece Selection: The Piece Manager uses rarity information from all connected peers plus its own piece ownership to decide which pieces to request next.

  5. Block Download: For each unchoked peer that has a piece we want, send block requests (pipelined). Receive piece messages, store blocks, verify completed pieces.

  6. Upload: Accept block requests from peers we’ve unchoked. Use sendfile() to write data directly from the file to the socket.

  7. Maintenance: Periodically re-announce to the tracker, re-evaluate choke/unchoke decisions, prune dead connections, update DHT routing table.

Thread Safety

BitTorrent clients are event-driven, not thread-per-peer. The main event loop runs in a single thread. Heavy operations (hash verification, disk I/O) are offloaded to thread pools or handled asynchronously. This avoids the complexity of shared-memory concurrency while still utilizing multi-core CPUs effectively.

State Machine for Each Peer Connection

Each peer connection can be modeled as a state machine:

DISCONNECTED → CONNECTING → HANDSHAKE → ESTABLISHED → CHOKED/UNCHOKED → DISCONNECTED

States:

  • DISCONNECTED: Initial state, or after a disconnect
  • CONNECTING: TCP connection in progress (non-blocking connect)
  • HANDSHAKE: Waiting for/sending handshake messages
  • ESTABLISHED: Handshake complete, waiting for/sending bitfield
  • CHOKED: We are choked by this peer (can’t send requests)
  • UNCHOKED: We are unchoked by this peer (can send requests)

Within CHOKED/UNCHOKED, we also track whether the peer is interested in us and whether we are interested in the peer.


Testing and Debugging

Building a BitTorrent client from scratch means you’ll encounter plenty of bugs. Here are some strategies for testing.

Using Test Torrents

Create tiny torrents (e.g., a 1MB file with 64KB pieces) for testing. The small size means you can complete downloads in seconds, making debugging faster. The small pieces mean you’ll exercise the piece management code more thoroughly.

The Swarm Simulator

For early testing, create a local swarm on your machine. Seed a torrent from one client instance, download it with another. Use localhost addresses so you don’t need NAT traversal. Verify that the downloaded file matches the original byte-for-byte.

Capturing Packets with Wireshark

Wireshark has a BitTorrent dissector that can decode and display protocol messages. This is invaluable for debugging protocol compliance. Set a display filter like bittorrent to see only BitTorrent traffic. You can verify handshake sequences, message lengths, and payload contents.

Logging Everything

In early development, log every message received and sent. This is noisy but catches protocol errors early. As the client stabilizes, reduce logging to errors and significant events.

Common Pitfalls

  1. Byte order: Remember that all multi-byte integers in the wire protocol are big-endian (network byte order). Forgetting this leads to completely garbled messages.

  2. Bitfield padding: When parsing bitfields, don’t forget to trim the padding bits. Including them will make you think the peer has pieces it doesn’t.

  3. Choke/Unchoke timeouts: The first peer you connect to might keep you choked for up to 30 seconds (optimistic unchoke interval). Don’t panic if nothing happens immediately.

  4. Connection direction: When you connect to a peer, you’re the initiator. When a peer connects to you, you’re the responder. Both sides handle the handshake identically (send handshake, receive handshake).

  5. Partial piece handling: If a peer disconnects while sending a piece, you might have a partial piece. Store it and request the remaining blocks from another peer.


The Future of BitTorrent

BitTorrent is not a dead protocol. It continues to evolve. Here are some areas of active development:

WebTorrent

WebTorrent is a JavaScript implementation of BitTorrent that runs in web browsers using WebRTC for peer-to-peer connections. It brings BitTorrent to the web without plugins, enabling streaming of video and audio directly from the swarm. WebTorrent uses the same wire protocol but encapsulates messages in WebRTC data channels.

IETF Standardization

The BitTorrent protocol has been submitted to the IETF for standardization as RFC 7844 (and related documents). While adoption is not universal, this effort aims to formalize the protocol and improve interoperability.

Improved Security

Work is ongoing to add stronger security: using SHA-256 or SHA-3 for piece hashes, encrypting metadata, and improving identity verification. The Merkle tree extension allows for piece-level verification without requiring the entire hash list upfront.

Streaming Support

Traditional BitTorrent is designed for downloading complete files, but extensions like BEP 0032 (BitTorrent Streaming) and BEP 0035 (Torrent File Format with Streaming Support) enable streaming playback. The key insight is that streaming requires prioritizing certain pieces (the ones currently being played) over others (the rest of the file), which conflicts with the rarest-first strategy.

Content Delivery Networks

Some commercial CDNs use BitTorrent-like protocols for certain use cases. For example, Spotify uses a P2P protocol for distributing cached content to desktop clients, reducing server load. Microsoft has experimented with P2P updates for Windows. These implementations borrow heavily from BitTorrent’s design.


Conclusion: Why Build Your Own Client?

After six months of building a BitTorrent client, I can say with confidence that it’s one of the most educational projects I’ve ever undertaken. It touches on:

  • Network programming: TCP, UDP, event loops, socket optimization
  • Distributed systems: Peer discovery, consensus, fault tolerance
  • Cryptography: Hash functions, integrity verification, encryption
  • Data structures: Hash tables, bitfields, priority queues
  • Performance optimization: Zero-copy I/O, pipelining, concurrency
  • Protocol design: Binary protocols, extensibility, versioning

Beyond the technical skills, building a BitTorrent client gives you a deep appreciation for the elegance of the protocol. Bram Cohen solved a hard distributed systems problem with a remarkably small spec (the original BitTorrent specification is only about 20 pages). The protocol’s longevity—over 20 years and counting—is a testament to its design.
