Our implementation uses std::memory_order_acquire/release for the key operations. The global epoch load in enter_critical uses memory_order_acquire to see the latest epoch. The store of active_epoch uses release so that when another thread reads it, it sees the epoch. In try_reclaim, we load active_epoch with acquire. This ensures that if we see a thread’s active epoch >= X, we also see all memory operations that happened before that thread set its epoch. This is necessary because the thread may have retired nodes and we need to ensure we see those retire operations before freeing. Actually, the retire list is per‑thread, so the reclaiming thread only accesses its own retire list. The visibility of other threads’ retired nodes is not an issue because we only free our own retired nodes. The critical ordering is that when we check min_active, we see up‑to‑date values of other threads’ active epochs. The acquire/release pairs guarantee that.

The Linux kernel’s RCU is essentially an EBR with grace‑period detection via context switch. In user space, libraries like liburcu provide similar functionality. They use a dedicated reclaimer thread that periodically checks quiescent states. Our design is a simplified version.
